Subject: Karakalpakstan Art Museum

Karakalpakstan Art Museum

Karakalpakstan - the name evokes poignant images: the crisis of
the Aral Sea, the long and rich history of the silk road, and the
civilisations flourishing and inhabiting this land. Amonst the
gems of the region, there lies an art museum - home of the
remarkable collection assembled by Igor Savitsy during the
1960-70's. The Savitsky Art Museum is located in Nukus, the
capital of Karakalpakstan was founded in 1966.

Igor Savitsky (1915-1984), an artist from Moscow, came to
Karakalpakstan as a member of the Khorezm Archeological
Ethnographic Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He spent
years studing and collecting ethnographic art of the region. His
collection of 81,500 pieces includes both ancient treasures from
Bactria and Sogdiana periods (3rd century BC); and more modern
and avangarde pieces of Uzbek and Russan artists who worked
between 1900 and the 1930's. These artists, part of the great
European revolution in modern art history, were virtually
silenced by the political pressures of the time. If it were not
for Savitsky, The works of these artists would have been
destroyed by the Soviet Communisty system.

Well, depending on how much money a plebe has to spend, it MIGHT be
available. If you're connect to the internet, point your web
browser at:

That's the homepage of the World News Connection. WNC is the
online version of FBIS. Access costs money, though you can
scan the headlines and see what sources they monitor without
paying anything. Access fees start at $21 for 7 days of
unlimited online searching, or $50 per month. For additional
sums, you can create "profiles" and have everything that WNC
translates on a specific topic sent to you by e-mail...in
addition to accessing the online database for searches.
