Digest for 96-03-22

Dear Friends,

You are invited to join with Alan Boyle of GlasNews in the F&P Chat Room
this Sunday, March 24 at noon EST (9:00 am Pacific time, 8:00 pm Moscow
time) for a
discussion of the following topics:

    1. What do you think about all the talk regarding the return of the
Soviet Union? (Related to the State Duma's recent resolution
saying the dissolution of the Soviet Union was illegal)

    2. Are we in the West getting an accurate picture of the political
       debate in Russia?

    3. Do you have any reminiscences to share about the five years since
the Kremlin putsch and the collapse of the Soviet Union? Have
       things gotten better or worse?

Folks can either tune in the Chat Room at the appointed time or leave
their comments in the conference room of the F&P Coffeehouse.

You can enter the interactive Chat Room from our "Community Corner" or
directly at URL: http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/chat/chat.html

Please join Alan and friends this Sunday morning for what should be an
interesting discussion!

Subject: April 1996 Trade Mission to Russia/Participants and Projects

Dear Friends and Partners:

First, this will be our third and last posting in this series of
postings. Thanks for the prompt responses.

Our law firm, Hahn Loeser & Parks, is leading a Trade Mission of
businesspersons to the cities of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladivostok next
month, and will in fact be arriving in Moscow on April 8, 1996. We will be in
Moscow until April 11, 1996 at which time we head to Vladivostok. We expect
then to be in Nizhny Novgorod on the 17th and 18th of April, 1996.

We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and with others with
whom you may be acquainted in businesses that are complementary to those of
our participants. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with
information necessary to locate suitable potential partners or, as
appropriate, regional authorities in a position to assist or participate in
these ventures.

        BACKGROUND

Our law firm is comprised of approximately 100 attorneys, and we have
served the needs of individuals, government and businesspersons for more than
75 years. We provide the full range of traditional legal services (such as
drafting of contracts, litigation, arbitration, and advising with respect to
finance and tax issues), but we are particularly creative with respect to
international business matters.

For the past several years we have dedicated our efforts to
encouraging clients in the US, Canada and Europe to explore business
relationships with Russian and CIS companies. Today we represent many Western
businesses seeking to develop joint ventures in Russia and the CIS, and we
also represent Russian companies seeking to license technologies, sell
equipment and export many products to the West. Our Trade Mission to Russia
is intended to bring US businesspersons to Russia to encourage the development
of productive relationships. We look forward to facilitating these efforts
with your assistance.

        THE PARTICIPANTS

So that you will have a better idea of our participants' capabilities
and interests, and so that you can, we hope, explore business "matches" that
will serve the interests of all concerned, I have set forth below our
participants and their particular experiences and interests.

*** Mark Fishman, S.S. Kemp & Co.: S.S. Kemp & Co. is one of
Ohio's largest and best established distributors of food service equipment and
supplies. S.S. Kemp's catalog contains thousands of items ranging from
freezers, ovens, stoves, and specialty food equipment to restaurant supplies
such as plates, dishes, silverware and the like. The company also has a
design arm and consultancy that works with clients to create well-planned
restaurant and food service facilities.

S.S. Kemp, which already sells into Russia from the U.S., is
interested in establishing new customer relationships with significant buyers
of equipment and supplies or, in the alternative, locating viable candidates
for distribution of products in various regions. The company's president,
Mark Fishman, is interested in continuing the growth of the company's Russian
customer base.

*** Brad Downing, The Downing Group: The Downing
Group (DG) is a U.S. holding company that assists in marketing and
distributing automotive products worldwide, with over 50 years experience in
the automotive aftermarket industry. DG represents over 100 aftermarket
manufacturers throughout the U.S. and other parts of the world. DG also
offers opportunities for Russian manufacturers seeking to enter the U.S.
market through its distribution and warehousing facilities, product catalogs
and direct marketing (including its own variety of coupon books), and Internet
marketing.

The company's president is interested in locating suitable
partners to distribute and warehouse DG's products and services, and in
building long-term relationships with progressive Russian companies. DG would
also like to explore distributing a wide variety of Russian products, not
merely those limited to the automotive aftermarket.

*** Emil Bogden, Bogden Architects: Bogden Architects is a
Columbus, Ohio-based architectural services firm that provides the full range
of professional design services required by world- class developers and
contractors. The company has developed extensive experience in the design and
construction of banks, offices, stores, clinics, recreational centers and
restaurant/family dining/fast food facilities.

The company is interested in meeting with Russian or other
entities with whom to joint venture in design and build projects. The
company's president would also be pleased to meet with local developers of
property to explore consulting arrangements for optimal use of space, internal
design, etc. Other prime candidates would be hotel operators, franchisors of
restaurants and residential housing builders seeking to design and/or
construct locations in Russia.

We hope also to bring with us representatives (as yet uncommitted) of
the following industries:

*** Lumber: A U.S. mill seeks to obtain significant
quantities, on a monthly basis, of pine and larch, as well as other soft
woods. Assistance in locating suppliers of such woods, cut and kiln-dried to
the company's specifications, would be very helpful. The company is prepared
to visit Russia during our Trade Mission if suitable partners can be located.
The description of product they are seeking is attached. Please contact me
immediately if this product is available in your region.

                *** Foodstuffs/Waste-to-Ethanol Processing: A major
engineering consultancy with proprietary technology enabling it to convert raw
foodstuffs, (such as wheat, corn, and potatoes) as well as wood pulp and other
waste products, to ethanol, including potable alcohol of exceptional quality,
has expressed a strong interest in working with companies or governmental
units to produce ethanol and, if applicable, transfer the technology necessary
to do so. This company has extensive experience in international markets (it
has completed more than 25 projects outside the U.S.), and has worked with
some of the world's largest manufacturers, distillers and grain and paper
processors.

*** Wood Pulp-to-Lignin/Alcohol Pulping: The referenced
engineering consultancy possesses technology to accomplish solvent pulping
that produces lignin, a material highly prized in the friction products
industry. Paper and lumber mills would be prime candidates for such projects.

*** Energy Conversion and Efficiency Consulting: A
Washington, D.C. - based organization with extensive international experience
in conversion projects is interested in attracting US investors to projects
introducing more efficient and cleaner power and steam generating technology
to local producers of energy or industrial facilities. The organization has
successfully completed projects of this nature in the Czech Republic and in
Latin America. It works to achieve commercially viable solutions to energy
and environmental problems and conditions.

The organization is seeking to work with regional providers of
electricity, or with industrial facilities, on projects of this nature.

*** Cellular Communications: A major manufacturer of cellular
communications equipment (antennas, ground stations and repeater "booster"
facilities) is beginning to explore opportunities to sell equipment, or
possibly to manufacture, in certain regions of Russia and the CIS. The
company has recently concluded a substantial sale of equipment to Uzbekistan.
Their unique technology offers an inexpensive method of substantially
expanding cellular coverage without building new cell sites.

The company would be interested in meeting with regional
officials to discuss the development of cellular networks, regional
communication needs, and the ways in which the company's technology and
equipment may be appropriate for specific areas of Russia and the CIS.
Moreover, they are interested in meetings with cellular network operators and
distributors.

        *    *    *

We would appreciate any assistance you can provide in locating
suitable partners with whom these representatives may begin discussions.
Please contact us if we can provide you with any further information. We look
forward to visiting with you and your colleagues next month.

With best regards, we are

The Institute for International Communication and the International

Tver InterContact Group, an independent educational and consulting
organization, announce the opening of enrollment for our first Spring

Building on our past year's successful Summer and Winter Language

Practicum will have two objectives:

* to give students and professionals orientational support and translation
and consulting assistance in their reporting and research endeavors in

* to provide them with the practical Russian language skills
  essential to their work.

Moreover, Tver offers the perfect vantage point from which to observe
the Presidential Election as it progresses in the provinces. Anyone can
see what goes on in the metropoli of St. Petersburg and Moscow, but
only in the provinces can you see how the other 90% of Russia's
citizens live -- how they view the candidates and the electoral process,
the troubles they face in everyday life, and in general the economic,
political, and social reality lived by nine out of every ten Russians.

We invite students, professors, teachers, business people and tourists of
any age and trade, who are attracted to the active exploration of a
national Culture, Language, and People, rather than dreary sightseeing
tours trapped behind a tour bus window, caught in the vise of a
package tour schedule.

The Practicum begins on May 27 and continues through June 23.
Participation will be limited to 50 students. Participants may enroll
under either of two programs, one tailored to students and providing
an internship placement with a Russian newspaper, and the second
designed to support professional research:

Student Internship Program (4 weeks) -- from May 27 to June 23.
Professional Program (3 weeks) -- from June 2 to June 23.

Both programs include weekend tours within Tver to local artists'
workshops, area monasteries, churches, and museums, and special
research and recreational excursions to nearby cities such as Torzhok,
Rzhev, Ostashkov, Staritsa, and Moscow.
