APPENDIX: LISTSERV address & basic procedures

----------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT'S NEW . . .

* We invite you to visit Sasha's newly remodeled kitchen on Friends and
Partners. Here, you will find a new version of David Zlotchenko's
US/Russian/International Cookbook where you can browse and search for
recipes - and also share with everyone your own culinary favorites. There
are pointers to other Internet resources about cooking and eating, a new
interactive forum where you can contribute your own stories,
traditions, etc., and the "Kitchen Chat" room where you can share
information on whatever topic you like.

In a shameless effort to entice you to contribute, we are sponsoring a
contest in which we will award big prizes (well, 2 cookbooks!) to the two
individuals who contribute the most (and most tasty) recipes. The contest
will be judged by eight judges (four in Russia; four in America) and will
be weighted heavily for number of recipes contributed but also will include
the quality of the recipes (the judges will even cook and report on
  some of them!).

The contest rules are simple. Just visit the new kitchen area
  (URL: http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/life/kitchen/) from the
"Life" page, choose the cookbook section and then contribute as many
recipes as you like using the easy-to-complete form or by sending email to
cookbook@solar.rtd.utk.edu. The prizes will be awarded (and mailed) to
the two winners - the American/International cookbook to a Russia/NIS
participant and the Russian cookbook to a participant from America (or
anywhere else). The final date for submitting recipes for the contest
will be April 12, 1995, and we will announce the winners on April 19.
  The two prizes are:

         "A Taste of Russia, A Cookbook of Russian Hospitality";
Traditional Recipes from Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Estonia,
Latvia, Lithuana, and the Other Soviet Republics.
Darra Goldstein. Published by Harper Perennial (304 pages)

"Culinary Arts Institute Encyclopedia Cookbook"; Edited by
Ruth Berolzheimer. A Perigee Book published by The Berkley
         Publishing Group (974 pages)

We want to thank our friend David Zlotchenko once again for providing
us with such a nice cookbook facility and a special thank you to Sasha
Ovchinnikov who has done a wonderful job remodeling our kitchen and
creating the new interactive kitchen/cuisine forums. Sasha continues
to make F&P a much more interesting and more interactive place!

Also, we welcome Jodi Fryman who joins us as moderator of the
"Kitchen Chat" room. Jodi has travelled in Russia and will be glad
to answer questions and help with discussion in this new room.

Please enter the contest and share your culinary favorites with
your friends from around the world!

                NIS-American Penfriend Exchange

Thousands of children, teens, and adults from the former Soviet Union
countries are seeking postal mail (not email) penpals in the United
States. The organization "SAPE" (formerly called "The Soviet-American
Penfriend Exchange") has been matching Americans with penpals in the
former USSR since 1989. In the past year, more than 100,000 letters have
arrived from the former USSR and they desperately need help to find
penpals in the USA for these people. Mailings done to US schools have
resulted in penpals for less than 10% of these people. Individuals or
groups (aged 10 and up) who would like to participate should send a
self-addressed stamped envelope to SAPE at:

SAPE
P.O. Box 251689
Glendale, CA 91225
U.S.A.

Please feel free to pass this on to any other individuals, families,
classes, or youth groups you think may be interested in participating!!

Subject: Soviet Scientist Immigration Act - 1992

X-POST from FPSPACE

Dear Friends & Partner Subscriber,

It seems most people are unaware of the Soviet Scientist Immigration Act of
1992. Congress authorized certain categories of scientists in the former
Soviet Union and from the Baltic States to emigrate to the United States.
Various provisions apply, including:  a limit of 750 emigres per year;
the scientist must be highly qualified and has worked on an advanced weapons
system in the last ten years; the scientist will be exempted from labor
certification; the scientist does not need a job offer prior to receiving
the visa.

Closing date for applications is October 24th, 1996, although congress
of course might decide to extend it, typically for another year, but
this is not guaranteed.

If you know a qualified former-Soviet or Baltic Scientists who wishes to
emigrate to the USA, please contact me by email.

Best regards,

Charles R.

Subject: St. Petersburg Information

Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know about my most plesant
experience in St. Petersburg. It was my driver/guide/interpreter, Mr.
Kirill Rasumov.

With the busy schedule I had planned it was worth it to negotiate the
metro system and the cost of hotel recommended drivers was way out of
my budget. Through a friend though I found a number of young Russian
adults who, using their own cars, act as drivers, guides, and
interpreters.

At $50.00 per day(US), and with being on call 24hrs a day, one couldn't
beat the price or the experience of 'seeing' St. Petersburg this way.

I would like to recommend my particular driver to anyone planning on
visiting St. Petersburg. His contact information is: Mr. Kirill
Rasumov, Tel/Fax:(anytime) 7-812-275 66 59.

For anyone who uses Kirill I must recommend you tour his school, Public
School #157. He set this up for me through the director of the school
and it was one of my most fantastic memories of the city. The school
historian, a survivor and hero of the siege, has a tremoundous number
of artifacts which detail the history of the school from its
begginnings as a gym for the Czars, to its use as an Army school during
the war, to its use now as one of the best English schools in the city.
