Digest for 96-02-21

Dear Friends,

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has written or
called about the new F&P WWW server! The response has been so encouraging
and means a lot each of us. We are very behind on our email but will try
to catch up and respond to all notes over the next week.

We would like to call your attention to a new service on F&P in which we
hope many of you will participate. Thanks to Natasha, Evgeny, and Dima,
we now have a new database describing people involved in or interested in
US/West - Russian/NIS collaboration and exchange. We hope you will visit
this new "subscribers database" at URL:

   http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/db/biodemo/

(also available from our "Who's Who" page)

Please take time to browse and search the database - we think you will find
it interesting!

And, most importantly, please use the new forms-based facility to enter a
record describing your interests. It is very simple to use - just find the
button labeled "Add my Record" on the page referenced above.
Alternatively, you can copy the "form" below into an email message, fill in
your information, and send it to frnds@solar.rtd.utk.edu and the
information will be placed into the database for you.

Subject: Home Page Announcement:
         Russia and West Virginia Foundation

I would like to direct your attention to a new web page on the Internet.
With many thanks to Friends and Partners, the Russia and West Virginia
Foundation now has its own Homepage. The URL for the Russia and West
Virginia Foundation is http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/~ericd/index.htm

I am sure a lot of people are asking why West Virginia would have a
foundation with Russia and my response would be, visit the Homepage. The
short answer is the foundation was formed to organize education and
business exchanges. The foundation was officially chartered in February of
1993 after 22 West Virginia educators visited Kaliningrad, Moscow Region.
Since then, there have been numerous student and educator exchanges, both
short and long term, numerous exchanges of business leaders and government
officials from both countries and several cultural exchanges including a
concert tour of West Virginia by the Presidential Orchestra of the Russian
Federation and concert tours by several Russian folk groups. A West
Virginian 60's rock and roll band, The Esquires also played on Russian
national television and in several night clubs in Moscow last spring.

There are more great exchanges planned for the near future, the foremost
being The Ultimate Cruise. The cruise trip will begin with a few days of
sight-seeing in Moscow and then a chartered flight to Odessa followed by a
river cruise up the Dnepr River to Kiev with a side trip to Sevastopol.
Visit the Homepage for more information on this adventure. The cruise is
planned for the last two weeks of May.

In March, there will be a concert tour of a Russian children's Folk choir
performing in West Virginia but also in Buffalo, New York and in Hampton,
Va. For Friends and Partners living in those areas, check out the Homepage
to see when the concert tour will come through. Check back to the page
regularly for more details about the choir.

Also, last but not least, are a collection of photographs of Russia on the
Homepage. I say not least because they are mine. At the moment, there are
just nine black and white images, but in the near future, I plan to expand
the display. Check out my photographs and let me know what you think.

We at the Russia and West Virginia Foundation look forward to hearing from
our Friends and Partners from all over the world.

Sincerely,

Eric Douglas

Subject: Wilderness trips in Russian Far East

The Pacific Branch of the Russian Geographic Society (in Vladivostok) would
like to invite interested parties to go on wilderness expeditions in
the Russian Far East. The following is information on the various trips
they offer, and the cost.

The usual guide is Leonid Bannikov, who has years of experience as a
wilderness guide and "tourism" instructor.

On a personal note, my husband and I have taken numerous trips with
Bannikov - short cross-country ski trips, long-weekend rafting trips,
hiking trips. We've been on trips with Russian members of the "section",
and on a trip organized just for a group of Americans. Bannikov is a
fascinating guy who can walk up to a tree and tell you the medicinal
properties of the bark. Any trip with him is a great experience. Plus,
getting out into the wilderness of the Russian Far East is fabulous.

The Geographic Society has no email or fax, so anyone interested can
contact me at (Allegra@actr.marine.su) and I will pass along the info.

Proposal for co-operation by the Pacific Branch of The Russian Geographic
Society, Department (Section) of Nature Study and Tourism

1. Organization of ecological expeditions in the Russian Far East - camping
trips, cross-country ski tours, rafting, mountain climbing.

2. Organization of specialized tours - fishing, bird-watching, photographic
or video "safaris", entomological, ethnographic.

3. Organization of historical tours (following the route of the first
explorers of the Far East) and other special tours through wild and
uninhabited areas.

4. Organization of rafting expeditions on rivers of varying difficulty
(I-V category), in the Russian Far East and Eastern Siberia.

5. Organization of special interest tours

The section can provide:
a. camping equipment (tents, camp sauna, cooking equipment)
b. rafting equipment (rafts and catamarans)
c. ropes and other equipment for simple climbing tours.

Special equipment and personal supplies are NOT provided.

The Nature Study Section was founded in 1926 and is currently celebrating its
70th anniversary. For 25 years it has studied the routes of the first
explorers. Members of the section have experience in leading tours of
varying difficulty, including long trips up to 30 or 40 days, covering more
than 1000km.

The cost of a trip is $20/day/person for equipment rental and wilderness guide.
Food, transportation (from Vladivostok to start of trip, and pickup at end of
trip), and housing costs in Vladivostok before/after trip are variable,
depending on the trip. (Some start sites can be reached by local train,
others can only be reached by helicopter). For small groups, homestays with
members of the section can be arranged. For larger groups, hotel accommodation
can be booked.

Everyone participates in the set up of the camp (preparation of food, gathering
firewood, putting up bivouacs). In certain cases and for an additional fee,
camp workers, scientific instructors, or other support staff can be included
on the trip.

Please note:
a. many tours originate and end in wild places, which are only accessible by
helicopter (maximum group 12-14 persons with equipment, cost of an hour flight
approx. $600-$700)
b. in the case of inexperienced groups, it is preferable to have a mix of
tourists and experienced members of the local section.
c. if the group consists of more than 15 persons, there is a discount on the
cost of the trip, although during the trip such a group should be divided into
two.
d. the foreign trip leader will pay only for transportation costs; equipment
fees will be covered by the section.

Subject: Russian MBA Association (fwd)

I have received information about the Russian MBA Association
from its founder and organizer - Vladimir Ashurkov. Perhaps the
organization and its plans will be of interest to some members of
the list.
*****************************************************************
                     RUSSIAN MBA ASSOCIATION
History, Current Status and Future Prospects
*****************************************************************
The market reforms in Russia and in other NIS (Newly Independent
States) countries, as well as the establishment of a significant
number of Russian commercial firms and entrance of foreign compa-
nies into the Russian market created demand for well-educated,
open-minded, business-oriented professionals. Since educational
institutions in Russia are new to providing business training and
developing the student's skills needed in a free-market economy,
there exists a serious gap between the demand for people with
these skills and the supply of young professionals, capable both
of understanding the intricacies of the nascent Russian market
and of bringing managerial, financial and other expertise from
the developed markets.

Many Russian young men and women who recognize this are pursuing
business studies or are preparing to apply to MBA programs in
universities across the world, but primarily in the USA. In
addition to citizens of the former Soviet Union studying for an
MBA, there is a considerable number of foreign professionals who
have worked in the FSU (Former Soviet Union), who are interested
in applying the skills and knowledge acquired during business
studies working in this geographical area. This group of people
has quite distinct common interests, which include keeping in-
formed of events in the FSU, networking with other business
students and, most importantly, obtaining employment in the
region.

The Russian MBA Association was created in the fall of 1995 by
Vladimir Ashurkov, a second-year student at the Wharton School of
the University of Pennsylvania who realized the need for bringing
these individuals together. The goals of this organization are:

* to bring together business professionals interested in working
  in Russia or with Russia;
* to promote American business education in the countries of the
  FSU;
* to facilitate communication between MBA students, graduates and
potential employers (both Russian and international) in the
  region.

Especially important is the ability of the Russian MBA Associa-
tion to provide a vehicle for American and Russian companies to
effectively communicate with MBA students and graduates interest-
ed in working in Russia, who are geographically separated. For
students it is an effective way to learn about other business
students, get job leads and share their educational, professional
and related experiences.

What medium could have provided a way to reach people in the US
and Russia, separated by thousands miles? The Internet, and
especially the rapidly developing World Wide Web, seemed to be
the obvious choice. Practically all students have access to the
Internet through university accounts, and an increasing number of
young business professionals use the Internet for various purpos-
es. It is a convenient and inexpensive method of sharing and
disseminating information. Thus, efforts were first focused on
creating the World Wide Web site, devoted to resources for MBA
students and graduates interested in Russia. Its WWW address:

                  http://www.serve.com/mbafsu/

Creating the appropriate structure and content for the site took
a lot of time and effort. Currently, net surfers accessing the
site can do the following:

* Register through an on-line form to become members of the
  Russian MBA Association;
* Browse through the list of current members to get information
  about their schools, graduation year and e-mail address;
* Get information about funding MBA studies for citizens of the
  FSU (Edmund Muskie Fellowship, EBRD Loan Program, etc.);
* Access news and other Russia-related Internet material.

The response to the creation of the Russian MBA Association has
been strong and consistent. Currently, there are about 30 members
of the Association and several registration forms are received
per week. This response confirmed the need for this organization
and encouraged expansion aimed at bringing this virtual community
closer together, promoting the Association and coordinating its
external relationships.

Until now the Association has been maintained by the volunteer
efforts of an MBA student. Some important aspects that would
enhance the publicity and the effectiveness of the Association
were never carried out due to lack of consistent support. In
particular, promotion of the organization in the business commun-
ity and the solicitation of job postings from various companies
doing business in the FSU require a full-time commitment. The
initial idea of publishing a regular electronic newsletter con-
taining job opportunities and other news of interest for business
students, has not yet been fully realized.. To ensure the con-
tinuing existence and development of the Russian MBA Association,
its founder, encouraged by MBA students and graduate's response,
is now in the process of obtaining funding from interested spon-
sors. The funds obtained would be used to hire a permanent
employee responsible for maintaining the WWW site, communicating
with American and Russian business community in order to share
information and job opportunities with the Association members
and publishing the newsletter. Possible sponsors include, but
are not limited to, companies doing business in the FSU interest-
ed in reaching business-educated professionals, employment agen-
cies and non-profit organizations supporting market reforms and
education in the FSU. The benefits of sponsorship include access
to a resume database, targeted mailing (by country of citizen-
ship, university, previous experience, etc.) and promotion though
WWW (company logo, links, etc.).

If you are interested in becoming a partner of the Russian MBA
Association, or if you would like to post a position, please
