WHAT'S NEW . . .
* Andrey Sebrant has published a wonderful new article in his "Moscow Life
Series" entitled "Season of early nights" - a description of December and
Christmastime in Moscow. From the introduction: "Winter 1995 in Moscow.
Christmas time and time of elections; Christmas lights are illuminating
political posters, candidates keep promising much more than any sane Santa
would, political commercials on TV are mixed up with the ads of season
gifts ... a strange time... "

Subject: Re: Work Query
Hello everybody,
I am a college student about to finish my courses at Edinburgh
University. I speak some Russian, but want to try and improve it
while living and working in Russia, when I finish school in July. I am
hoping to find some sort of work opportunity or exchange scheme,
preferably in Moscow or St. Petersburg, from around September
onwards. I am particularly interested in journalism or social work,
and would consider any jobs anyone could offer me, particularly if
tthey could help me find board and lodging. Please email me on
R.A.PAGNAMENTA@sms.ed.ac.uk if you think you can help.

Seeing that various emails have been sent in concerning Central

know of any polish summer schools and might be able to put me in
contact with relevant people or mail me some addresses.
Thank you.

Subject: Teaching job
Dear F&P. I am interested in a paid position teaching conversational
English in Russia. I am a very energetic, 37 year old, college educated
American citizen with a great positive attitude. I am available during the
summer of 1996. I do not speak Russian, however, one of the reasons I want
to teach in Russia is to start learning the language. I am open to all
offers. If you know of any openings, please e-mail me soon.

Subject: internet services in Russia
Hello, friends:
I am planning to spend some time in Moscow this year. Is there a
way to connect to the Internet at affordable rate? I know that Relcom
provides Inernet connection for businesses. It is not clear though
that it is the same case with individual customers.
Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
Nelli.

Subject: Help with Belarus guidebook
(X-POST from BELARUS)
Greetings all,
I am nearly finished writing a guidebook called Russia,
Belarus and Ukraine by Rail and have these following questions.
When did Belarus sign the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe?
Following the shooting down of the balloon on 12 Sept 1995 which killed
two Americans, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs instigated a
criminal case against the military on 20 October 1995. Does anyone know
the outcome of it?
In the small village of Gai near Baranovichi 3,000 Czechs were killed in
1942. Does anyone know of the background to this?
What the Rylenki memorial Complex near Krupki commemorate?
Does anyone have a map of Brest with public transport routes and
telephone numbers?
I need translated about 60 words into Belarusian for my map legends and
would be grateful if anyone could help.
Best regards
Athol Yates

Subject: Learning Russian on the net
(X-POST from RUSTEX-L)
Hi all,
I am interested in finding in the net russian web sites (or
ftp,gopher...) with bilingual versions of their documents, one in
russian and the other in english.
As you can guess, this is a way for me to improve my russian by
examining those already translated texts.
So if you have already discovered similar places, could you
please post their address to the list, or send them to me ?
I am also looking for intermediate/advanced courses of russian
on CD-ROM. Could somebody please post a quick review of what is
currently available on the market (with a brief comment, if
possible) ?
Thank you in advance.

fills well.
Thank you for you input.

Subject: A Russian NGO seeks for partners
A Russian youth NGO called "The International Discussion Club
- Moscow" seeks for new partners on the following topics:
1. COURSES in RUSSIAN LANGUAGE and CULTURE.
For more than 4 years the IDC organizes Courses in Russian
language and Courses in Russian culture for young people from
abroad. Most popular programs are: Summer- and Winter-
Universities -- 2- and 4- weeks' courses in St.Petersburg and Moscow
during students' vacations. We propose Courses especially orientated
to elder pupils as well. We try to join similar courses in Europe to
allow Russian students to improve their language skills.
2. SPECIALIZED YOUTH SEMINARS.
We have a good experience in organizing introductory youth
seminars with aim to show Western students our way of life and our
problems. For 1996 we have planed seminars on the following topics:

- economy (for students in economy studying the Russian reforms);
- politics and youth (for members of youth political organizations);
- ecology (for all interested in environmental protection);
- music (for conservatory students and young musicians).
Dates and detailed programs are available on request.
So we need partners:
1. Who wants to join our courses or seminars in Russia;
2. Who organizes language courses or seminars abroad.
3. ENVIRONMENT.
Together with some European organizations we want to start
Eco-Counselling activity in Russia. So, we are interested in
studying Western experience in governmental and peoples'
activity on environment protection.
4. ELECTION OBSERVATION.
During the President's elections (June 1996) the IDC invites
political leaders, active members of political parties and youth
political organizations take part in a series of political seminars
in Russia and to join the team of official foreign observers.
On appointment with the Central Electoral Commission of Russia
we have successfully organized the independent foreign observers'
activity at the Federal elections on December 1995 and 1993.
The IDC is a youth non-governmental organization with the aim
to promote direct contacts between young people of Russia and
Europe. We started our activity in 1989 and we were one of the
first independent organizations fighting against the Iron Curtain.
The funny word "Discussion" appears in the name of the Club because
in that time it was not allowed to have opinions different from
official ones, but you could "to discuss" them. The IDC is
non-political, non-profit independent Russian NGO with branches in
St.Petersburg and Minsk.
If you are interested in establishing contacts with us or you can
help us to get to know similar youth organizations -- we are
ready to provide you with further information.
