APPENDIX: LISTSERV address & basic procedures

----------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT'S NEW . . .

* Ilya Sandler has developed a very nice application "Universal cyrillic
converter". It converts "on fly" between the most popular cyrillic
encodings
(DOS, WINDOWS, Macintosh, KOI8, ISO, transliteration) and allows to view
documents written in Russian, even if user's computer (browser) uses a
different cyrillic encoding or doesn't support cyrillic at all.

Please visit our "Cyrillic Text" page or directly at URL:

      http://funnelweb.utcc.utk.edu/~isandler/cyrconv.html

* St. Petersburg Classics offers musical resources of the former Soviet
Union. A full list of CDs is offered including each disk's contents.
Composer and artists biographies, summaries and unusually
complete annotations are also linked to the CD list.

Please visit our "Music" page or directly at URL:

      http://www.spb.su/SPb.Classics/

* The Center for Field Research at EARTHWATCH

"The Center develops research programs for funding by Earthwatch, an
international non-governmental organization that provides over $6 million
in grants annually to 150 projects in 55 countries. Earthwatch
dramatically expanded its support of field research in the eastern bloc
beginning in 1989, and has to date funded about 50 projects with over
$1 million and 1,200 volunteer research assistants."

Subject: Back issues of Moscow News

I have a collection of Moscow news in English which spans late '87 to
early '92. This is not a complete collection but I believe most ( 90% or
better) issues from that period are here. The period of the abortive
revolution is covered. I'm looking for a library or perhaps a university
professor which could make good use of these as a research tool. I'm
willing to donate them free except that who ever receives them will have to
pay shipping. Basically, it's a pile of newspapers about one foot high.
If anyone's interested, please contact me, Dennis Gallagher, at
'galron@galron.seanet.com'.

It's very important for me.
Thank you very much.

Dear Friends: I visited Moscow and St. Petersburg in June, 1995 as a
consultant to the Int'l Assn. Against Drug Traffick and Abuse, and the
Narc. Fnd. of the Russian Fed. (NARF). I have graphic tv film of the Russian
Drug Crisis and the attempts to deal with it from a law enforcement and
health standpoint. I am not having much success in getting American Media
to Use the film...it seems that the US is "all drugged out"..and cannot
justify showing Russia's drug problem because we cannot afford to address
our own. So, I am feeling that I am not meeting my obligation to these
very dedicated organizations, and hope that my friends on the internet can
provide me with some ideas or guidance. Happy New Year... Ron Brinn

Hi. We are trying to find more information about an item I heard on
BBC news today -- that the Mayor of Moscow plans to sweep the streets to get
rid of homeless people and beggars in Moscow.

Also, we are looking for correspondents in Russia to report to us
about outdoor markets in Russia -- street markets, farmers' markets, kiosks,
flea markets, street vendors, etc.. We are OPERNAIR-MARKET NET, a
non-profit educational and advocacy project. We charge no fees for what we do
and we are an all volunteer effort.

I have been invited to speak at a management conference sponsored by the
State Power University of Ivanovo on the topic of self-managed work teams
and management methods. The conference will be held at the end of March
1996. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might get funding? The
university has offered to take care of me once I arrive in Russia, but I
will have to get to/from St Louis to Moscow. Any leads or suggestions will
be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Dr Alan Cheney

P.S. Said university is currently translating for publication an article I
wrote on self-managed work teams.

Subject: Re: Digest for 95-12-21

Dear Professor Petro,

Please excuse the late response to your query, but I just returned from
winter break.

I wanted to offer a few words about travelling in northwestern Russia -
Petersburg, Novgorod, etc. I concur with Leah's admiration of St.
Petersburg and I strongly encourage you to go since it is one of the most
beautiful cities in Europe. In contrast to Leah, however, I have had
many bad experiences in Russia which you may be able to avoid.

Having spent nearly two years in St. Petersburg, I have noticed with
great dismay how crime and inflation have increased dramatically. I
strongly recommend not walking after dark, especially alone. Most of my
Russian friends are terrified of walking at night alone and it is much
worse for a foreignor. I have been accosted several times - both at
night and day. Luckily I was never hurt, but I have had money stolen.
Also be extremely wary of pick pockets - especially along Nevsky
Prospekt. Do not take any money out in public unless it is a small
amount. Also, there are several professional groups of beggars, so if
you give money, be aware that it may end up in someone else's pockets.
Lastly, never never never change money anywhere except a bank!

As for health precautions, do not drink water from the tap, not only in
Petersburg, but in any Russian city. As for medical services, I have
been to several Russian doctors in Russian clinics and I do not think
they are as qualified as western specialists. If I could have afforded
to go to AMC, I would have.

As far as Novgorod (which is more than 200,000 people), there are many
tourists and tourist facilities. I have been there five times - and the
tourist industry keeps growing. Leah is right that you may not find as
many english speakers there, but there are many around the Kremlin at
tourist booths, etc. I recommend visiting Novgorod in the spring or
summer since the winter is extremely cold. As with Petersburg, take
great care when walking after dark.

These are many of the negatives, but one can never be too careful. As
many bad experiences I've had, the good far outweighs the bad. It is
possible to purchase practically everything now in Russia if you have
money. Phoning the states, however, is $3+ per minute from a post office
and faxing is equally high.

Good luck with your trip and enjoy.

Heidi Sherman
