Dear Friends,

I just finished reading "The Place of the Skull" by Kyrgyz
writer, Chingiz Aitmatov. I enjoyed the novel, but I am
not sure that I really understand all of what I read. Has
anyone else read this novel, and, if so, what were your
impressions?

Thanks,
Kyle

Subject: Students from Ukraine and Belorus

Once again, I am looking for families throughout the US to host high school
students-- this time the students are from Belorus and Ukraine and will be here
from September- December, 1996.

Project Harmony, a small not-for-profit organization based in Vermont has a US
Infomation Agency Grant to bring high school students from Ukraine and Belorus
to the US from September-December, 1996. The students will be hand-picked from
among the best and brightest of their peers-- this past fall, PH received over
2500 applications for 80 slots on a similar program for students from outlying
areas of Russia. Applicants are interviewed by PH staff-members based in the
former Soviet Union, who are familiar with both the US and Russian educational
systems, and are chosen based on academic achievement, outgoing personality,
special talent, and potential to both share and learn from their American host
communities.

The students' airfare, insurance, orientation costs, a small stipend, etc. are
paid for by the grant. Host families would be required to provide meals,
transportation to school, etc.

If there is anyone out there who might be interested in hosting a student, or
can suggest someone I might contact, please e-mail me directly, and I will be
glad to send you additional information, or answer any questions you may have.
I spent 1994-95 teaching Englsh in Russia through Project Harmony, so I have met
some of the students who have been on the program in the past, and would be glad
to share my personal experiences and insights as well.

Subject: Introduction

I am a veterinarian interested in international livestock development
... and in fact, many aspects of agriculture and food production. I have a
particular interest in the role of the veterinarian and the animal scientist
in Russia and the NIS....and would like to establish contact and dialog with
colleagues in these areas. It apears to me that this forum ..with it's
listserver and excellent interactive homepage would be an good place to
exchange information. Toward this end, I would like to encourage others to
respond and if we have enough interest perhaps a regular forum could
develop.
My experience has been that lack of access to computer equipment restricts
many of our colleagues ...but perhaps there are some out there associated
with Universities ,Institutes,Ministries or Development Projects that would
be interested?
As a start ...is there anyone else presently working on livestock development
subscribed? Anyone teaching in a Veterinary or Animal Science facility?
If so ...would you please write and introduce yourself? Is anyone
presently dealing with a veterinary, animal husbandry, food safety or
development aid project problem that perhaps we can help with ....I have some
experience in these areas and have a small network of colleagues that
perhaps could provide some input of ideas to assist you. ... I have a very
strong personal feeling food production is one of the most basic and
pressing problem everywhere in the world.... and only by cooperation and the
sharing of information will we ever be able to meet that demand.... i also
enjoy using the electronic media ..but cannot communicate unless someone out
there writes back and lets us know if they are interested.
take care.....

US-FSU COOPERATIVE GRANTS PROGRAM

The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) announces a
call for proposals for its new Cooperative Grants Program. This program
will allow joint teams of former Soviet and U.S. scientists and engineers
to apply jointly for support of cooperative projects in any area of
civilian research and development. Teams may apply for $10,000 to
$80,000 of funds for a two-year period. Applications are due March 1,
1996.

The CRDF is a private, non-profit foundation which was created on August
11, 1995 as an American response to the state of science and engineering in
the former Soviet Union, by encouraging productive civilian employment
opportunities for former FSU defense scientists, and by providing new
opportunities to pursue these goals in a framework of mutual benefit which
promotes the values of democratization and market economy.

For application materials to the CRDF Cooperative Grants Program, or for

Subject: Help! I need your critique and input!

I am trying to get together a few HTML pages that will act as a "Global
Information Locator Pavilion" in the 1996 Internet Expo. The goal is to
raise conciousness with the visitors--hopefully conveying a sense that
information discovery is of fundamental concern and presents socio-political
dimensions as well as engineering challenges.

I have drafted a set of pages to act as a scaffold for hanging other
interesting stuff. (You can see these at
http://www.usgs.gov/gils/locator.html) This pavilion will certainly be
evolving over the life of the Expo, but we also need to have something
interesting on opening day--January 1!

I'd very much appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have--and
particularly any additional pointers. For convenience, I'm attaching here
the main outline of the four substance pages of the pavilion as it sits at
this hot moment.
