Subject: new features in PSSRI

I'm continuing with my work breaking down the plaintext of "Post-Soviet
Study Resources on the Internet" (PSSRI) into finer hypertext modules.
This should make finding what you are looking for a bit easier in the
near future, so keep an eye on it from the "More Information
Resources" heading or use the URL

http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/~ikallen/pssri.html

The webservers, gophers and ftp sites have been set up for what I think
is easier access and navigation; your feedback is certainly welcome.
The climax to this process will be enabling a WAIS search that would
allow you to enter a search string, for example, "ukraine" and all of the
ftp sites, gophers and other references to resources converning Ukraine
would be returned.

So stay tuned!

Hi everybody!

Has anyone tried and got how to make cheap calls to the xUSSR?
As far as I understand lots of people out there were and are interested
in that. Can someone post more explicit info on that:
1-800 # of the phone company or whatever?
Thanks a lot in advance.

I've never written before, so please excuse me if I make some
technological blunder. I've only been e-mailing for 2 weeks, so I'm new at all
this.
I just wanted to send out a hello to everyone using this and I hope I
can begin using this e-mail thing effectively. I'm a 25 year old senior at
Central Washington University, majoring in Special Ed. Write back! -Amy

Looking for a source in the U.S. to rent subtitled Shukshin films (preferably
16 or 35mm film, not videotape).

Any ideas?

Subject: Kaledin novel

Does anyone know anything about a novel by an author named Sergej Kaledin
(spelling?). The novel was called something like "Construction
Battalion" and was supposedly banned by Gorbachov. I'd like to know what
the real title is, any information about it and its author, and if
anyone has a copy or leads to one. Thanks. --Gregg Opelka

Subject: Information on International Jobs/Careers

Inquiries on the net are often related to the search for interna-
tional employment opportunities. During a visit to Boston this
weekend, I noted three new publications that may be of interest:

1. The Almanac of International Jobs and Careers: A Guide to
   Over 100 Employers, Second Edition
Ronald L. Krannich and Caryl Rae Krannich
Impact Publications, Manassas Park, VA, 1994, $19.95
In addition to coverage of the usual international organiza-
tions, the book also lists many international consulting
firms, private Voluntary Organizations, Nonprofit Corpora-
   tions, Teaching opportunities, and internships

2. Jobs in Russia and the Newly Independent States
   Moira Forbes
Impact Publications, Manassas Park, VA, 1994, $15.95
Less detail than the book noted above, but a first effort to
address opportunities in Russia and NIS

3. American Jobs Abroad
Victoria Harlow and Edward Knappman (eds)
Visible Ink Press (Division of Gale Research), 1994, $19.95
Lists more than 800 U.S. corporations that employ Americans
overseas, and about 100 government agencies and not-for profit
   agencies.

Subject: Child's Book

Dear Friends:

I am trying to get hold of a good Russian children's book which I can use
to keep up my vocabulary. I am looking for one which has pictures of
everyday items (string, kite, tree, etc.) and the equivalent Russian words
underneath.

If anyone has any ideas or recommendations, please let me know.

Thanks,

Subject: Directory of "Who's Who" (forwarded message)

For those RusAg subscribers interested in the "Agribusiness in Russia, Who's
Who" directory, I received the following information from Interfax:

"In response to your inquiry on the "Agribusiness in Russia, Who's Who
directory, I would like to say that the weekly "Krestyanskie Vedomosti"
(Moscow, Ul. Gilyarovskogo 57 Tel: (095) 284-2650 and 284-0406) will be
publishing such a directory. The first volume has already come out and
includes addresses, telephones, and the names of directors of central and
regional organs in the Russian agrarian sector. The next volume will focus
on the grain market and will provide the names and addresses of major
bakeries, trading companies and others.

Respectfully yours,
Igor Merkulov, Editor, Interfax Food and Agriculture Report"

I hope this information will be helpful.

Want to write a book on Soviet Secrets?
Are you interested in working with a group of editors,
writers and designers to produce a book on Soviet-era
secrets? Our company, Red Bear Tours, believes there is
a market for a non-academic, journalistic-style book
composed of numerous short articles on the secrets of
the period which have recently been revealed. (The book
would be similar to a compilation of the best articles from
Soversheno Sekret) Examples include the Soviet invasion
plans for Europe, the underground network in Moscow,
and the 30km tunnel under the sea connecting the Russian
mainland with Sakhalin Island.
I am seeking another project manager, plus an editorial team,
writers, translators, historians, researchers. No qualifications
are necessary, only enthusiasm. This will be a co-operative
project and after the cost of publication is recovered, profits
are to be shared among participants. (As there are no wages and the
profit will be small when shared, this book is for people like
me who are interested in the area!). If you are interested
in this project, even if only to comment on its market appeal
or if you have ideas of what secrets you would like to read
about, please email me.
