Daily Digest for 94-08-24
Dear friends,
Today is a sad day for many of us in Knoxville as we bid farewell to
Natasha who returns to Pushchino after almost 4 weeks in America. It has
been a wonderful trip in all respects and we really regret to see it end.
We will write more in a few days about this trip and about Natasha's
first impressions of America.
We want to apologize for the late submission of this digest. After
returning Tuesday evening from a wonderful trip to Washington State, we
have had quite a bit of work to complete before Natasha's return trip
today. We should be back on a more regular schedule next week. (and we
hope to begin catching up on a rather enormous backlog of email next week)
We wish Natasha a safe and pleasant journey home today and look forward
to her many return visits to America.

Hello everybody involved in such a great service!
My name is Oleg. I live in London and study Medical Informatics. I would
be glad if anyone could explain me how to install cyrillic fonts. I use
OpenWindows version 3.3 and want to read some information from Gopher and
WWW on russian.
In return, I would be happy to provide any possible information from or about
Great Britain for every interested person.
My email is ovk@umds.ac.uk
Thank you in advance.
Oleg.
P.S. I was trying to send similar message to Natasha Bulashova at
natasha@ibpm.serpukhov.su but "Domain unknown" came up. Why?

Subject: Translation Software
Anybody have any suggestions for good PC-based Russian/English
translation software? I'm not looking for fonts, but actually software
which will translate one to the other. Many thanks. Feel free to
respond to the list or to me directly.

Subject: Doctor Valentina Tomarevskaya
After 50 years, I'm still trying to find out what happened to my doctor I had
in Moscow in April, 1945. I was an 8th Air Force airman forced to jump into
Poland from a damaged bomber, 3/2/1945. I contracted scarlet fever in Poland
which got me to Moscow as a patient in the Red Army military hospital system.
Valentina Tomarevskaya was a captain in the army with a Defense of Moscow
medal--an intelligent, lovely, sweet person who was very good to me in my
medical crisis. She and her civilian companion, Dora Altmark, escorted a
group of we hospital patients to Odessa, where we at last left Russia.
Valentina and I became good friends. I did learn her home was Rostov, and she
had a brother in the army.
I've made some contact over the years with the magazine Sputnik, and with the
Red Cross, with no luck--her wherabouts are unknown. The Red Cross did give
me new information: her name was Valentina Stepanovna Tomarevskaya. The
address of her hospital in Moscow was 1072 Mockba 18. She wrote that address
in my diary I kept in Poland and Russia.
I know it may be a hopeless search, still, but perhaps someone in Rostov
would know about the family Tomarevskaya.
Spaseba, Mark Warren

Subject e-mail in the Kyrgys Republic
Dear Friends:
I am interested in communicating with an organization in Karakol, in
the Kyrgys Republic. I would appreciate any information leading to an
e-mail node there (formerly Kyrgistan). Just an e-mail address of
someone in that republic would be a good start. Thank you for your
help.

In Russia, everything that was frozen
solid during 50 years of Cold War is
being blown apart in a devastating
whirlwind. The Russians are so near
their wits' end that the basic
texture of everyday life is heightened
and surreal, almost eroticized.
Everything is for sale, everyone is
on the take. The entire nation is a
mob racket.

Subject: Addition to Friends and Partners travel page
If you're interested in adding it to your Travel and Tourism page, I've just
finished preparing a set of Web pages about a trip to Russia I took last year.
Here's a description, which of course you're free to change or scrap as you
see fit:
---
A (a href="http://www.hyperion.com/~koreth/russia/")trip report(/a) from
(a href="http://www.hyperion.com/~koreth/")Steven Grimm(/a)'s 1993 visit
to Russia is online. It includes a travelogue, descriptions of places of
interest, and over 80 photographs from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and others.

Thanks!
