Subject: Request for assistance in my research.

    Dear Friends,

I'm an M.A. student at the Institute of Central/East European and
Russian Area Studies here at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
I hope to be in Moscow from September to December of this year in
    order to conduct research.
My area of interest is related to the question of "Russian Identity."
On the one hand we have the question of whether Russia should turn
towards the East or the West as it forms a post-Soviet identiy.
Yet I will also be examining the way foreign policy decisions and
    stances affect this identity.

If any of our friends in Russia could provide me perhaps with some
guidance or information during my stay in Moscow, I would greatly
    appreciate it.
It would also be a thrill to meet other partners from this server.

I hope to hear from you soon.

    Cordially,

    Alain O.J. Londes

Subject: Russain Forestry

Dear All:

I recently signed on to the Russag. network and I thought that I should
send a letter outlining my reasons for joining. (My apologies to the two or
three people who have already received this message.)

What I am trying to do is get in touch with researchers who have an
interest in Forestry in Russia. I received my B.S. in Forest Science from
the University of Wisconsin- Madison, and I am now a Research Specialist in
the Forestry Department at UW.

I am in the process of looking for a subject on which to base an M.S.
and/or Ph.D. thesis. I studied Russian for four years at University and I
am looking at the possibility of working on a project which combines my
science and language backgrounds.

This could be a project already in progress, or it could involve
cooperating on writing a proposal to fund a new project. I haven't
decided which field within forestry research that I would like to
specialize, however my interests lean toward Silviculture, International
forestry, and sustainable forestry at national and international level.

I have already met with a researcher from Krasnoyarsk, Siberia (Andrei
Laletin), who has expressed an interest in working on the development of a
landscape classification system for Siberian forests, however, due to the
uncertainties of funding I would still like to keep all my options open.

I look forward to hearing your comments or suggestions,

Andrew Monk.

Subject: USAID RFP - Monitoring Management/Economics Education Projects

It is my understanding that USAID recently issued a RFP entitled
Monitoring and Evaluation of Management Training and Economics
Education Project for Central and Eastern Europe [RFP OP/ENI/EE-
94-P-010]. Competition is limited to eligible 8(a) firms. The
purpose of the program is (and I am quoting) to determine the
validity, dependability, and impact of each of the USAID manage-
ment training grants, and recommend appropriate modifications.

Can anyone on the net identify 8(a) firms expected to bid on this
contract? We have a reasonably large number of qualified and
available academics/professionals who can be deemed experts in
management training, economic education programs, curricular
design, and program evaluation. Several are interested in par-
ticipating in the project, either as short-term or long-term
participants. And most of those interested have participated in
management training programs in Central and Eastern Europe.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please respond to my
personal e-mail address, to avoid cluttering the net. Let me
apologize for the cross-posting in advance. I will be posting
this to several discussion lists devoted to international topics.

All the best.

Subject: Wanted: Agric. land statistics Oblast level

Dear friends

I am involved in a project which examines
the nutrient releases to the Baltic Sea,
and in particular the contributions from
agricultural activities.

Thus, I have been searching extensively
to obtain agricultural (or arable) land statistics
from the Oblasts or Autonomous Republics of
Russia, Belorus and Ukraine that fully
or partly are within the Baltic Sea drainage
area (see list attached). So far without success.

I would therefore appreciate any pointers
to sources (statistical yearbooks, persons,
research groups studying post-Soviet agriculture
etc.) from where I can obtain such
information, preferably from a rather "recent"
year.

I am not a subscriber to this list,
please therefore respond directly to my
e-mail address.

If I receive any substantial answers, I will make a
summary to the list.

Sincerely
