Subject: Russia
Hi...I saw your address on the info about Friends & Partners. You obviously
have some familiarity with what's accessible right now, and I have a question
for you.
I've been researching and writing a book for four years, based on a true
story. One of the characters was originally from Russia and she migrated
to China with her family during the Bolshevik Revolution.
In 1991, I wrote to several addresses in Russia to find someone who might be
able to research a family history -- very basic stuff, nothing fancy. I was
willing to pay for the work, of course. I got a response from an
attorney and
bank wired the requested funds. I've not been able to reach him again.
Are you aware of any source who may know of someone in Russia who might
legitimately help me with some of the research I need? I would
appreciate any
leads you may have on this. Thanks...Grenetta

Subject: Moscow Living Arrangements
Dear Friends,
I am a freelance investment banker who will be teaching at Moscow
State University this fall. Although Moscow State will assist in finding
suitable living arrangements, I wonder if there may be someone who is
interested in sharing an apartment for reduced cost and/or better quarters
for the dollar, improved security, and general friendship?
I would like to locate near Moscow State University or at least
at a
location which is convenient to the University via public transportation. I
am seeking an English speaker as my Russian will be at a very rudimentary
level at best. My plans are to arrive on September 7 and depart December 15
or after. I will have a couple of visitors during the fall and winter, but
they should be for a week or so. Also, if you are interested in a shared
arrangement and do not have any specific accomodations in mind, the service
of my friends at Moscow State University in finding something is available.
Best wishes,
Steve

Russia,
Eastern Europe and the Far East. If you are interested in doing reviews,
please contact me at the address below with a short note about your scholarly
interests. (This message appeared earlier on the H-Russia discussion list).

Dear Friends,
If you missed the article in Wired a few months back detailing Bruce
Sterling's observations in Russia, go to their homepage:

and look in issue 2.04! It's worth the read!! Also, they have a little
trip in Siberia that is being put on-line, check it out:
WIRED Puts Friendship Flight Online
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+-
On July 15, 1994, a team of Americans and Russians began a journey across
northern Russia and Siberia on a monthlong exploration of areas long
forbidden to Westerners -- and WIRED is flying along, bringing daily
bulletins and photographs from the flight to the world.
In a 30-day Friendship Flight, two 12-person, Russian biplanes are
barnstorming around the periphery of Russia, visiting the Arctic Circle,
Siberia, then south along the border of China and Mongolia. Along the way,
the crew will visit ex-gulags, abandoned missile silos, and native Siberian
tribes who have lived along these coasts in isolation for generations.
"This expedition will bring people from Russia and America together," said
Shane Lundgren, expedition leader and pilot. "We hope to build lasting
bridges of trust as well as opportunity for progress among people in both
countries." The crew will visit territories inhabited by hunter-gatherers,
reindeer herdsman, and nomads -- including the lost kingdom of the Evenks
-- to bring to light the diversity of their rituals, lifestyles, and
destinies.
You can follow the progress of the Friendship Flight by checking out
WIRED's WWW site:
http://www.wired.com/Hotwired/siberia/index.html
or by clicking on the "Siberian Friendship Flight" icon on the front screen
of the WIRED area on AOL.
