Daily Digest for 94-07-19
Dear Friends,
It has been six months today since the initial announcement of "Friends and
Partners" on the Internet. From January 19 to July 19, we have seen
activity steadily grow on what is, without doubt, the most enjoyable work
of our lives and, we dare to hope, an increasingly useful service for you.
Six months ago, we never dreamed of what might result from this simple
goodwill gesture between two two people who "met" via electronic
communication on the Internet and who, much to their amazement, became best
friends -- two people from regions of the world where, for many years,
friendships have been in very short supply. We have been unbelievably
encouraged to watch this community of people grow from the 300 who answered
the initial posting on January 19 to over 875 subscribers today plus an
estimated 500 glasnet readers in the former soviet union. We have watched
with amazement as activity on the World Wide Web and WAIS servers steadily
climbs -- to where we now are averaging almost 2,000 accesses per day on
the two servers in Pushchino and Knoxville.
But, regardless of such numbers (by which we cannot help but be
encouraged), the rewarding and enjoyable part of this work has been
corresponding with and meeting people throughout the world -- and learning
of new relationships and cooperative activities that have resulted from
shared information and communication.
Of course, the "numbers" are small by "Internet standards"; there is SO
much good work that needs to be done; and we are continually frustrated by
our own slow pace -- necessitated, unfortunately, by busy work schedules,
heavy email loads, travel (and the occasional need to sleep).
We want this to continue to be a "friendly" place in which people can
freely share information and communication; one in which we seek to help
remove barriers -- geographical, political, cultural -- between people;
and in which we continue to see the benefits of building "global community"
-- person to person and one friendship at a time.
While we very much prefer to work in the background, we cannot help but
emerge occasionally to express our gratitude to this 'virtual community'
which gives us such enjoyable and rewarding work (and to our employers who
so generously support us). And we certainly wish to pledge our determined,
stubborn efforts during the coming weeks and months to further this work by
gently guiding the development of Friends and Partners -- a true "labor of
love" for us.
While still very young and immature, F&P is growing up -- and we're looking
forward to its second 6 months!

WHAT'S NEW . . .
* The First Russian-American Breast Cancer Conference open to physicians
throughout Russia will be be held in Saratov, Russia, June 7-9, 1995.
Organized to share advances in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and
prevention, the three-day conference is sponsored by the National Cancer
Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of
State, the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, the University
of North Carolina School of Medicine, the Saratov Medical University and
Russia's National Oncology Center in Moscow.
Described on "meetings" page (from "funding" page).
* A new mechanism for posting to the "FRIENDS" list for people who read
these digests from the GLASNET conferences is now available. We have
recently learned that the F&P digests are distributed throughout
the former soviet union via the GLASNET news conferences. Previously,
folks reading from these conferences were not permitted to post to
the friends list (since they are not official "subscribers"). We now
have a mechanism by which they can post -- by sending their email
to the address: glasfp@solar.rtd.utk.edu.
Our thanks to Andrey Sebrant of Moscow for helping distribute the
digests via GLASNET and for informing us of the posting problem.
