Daily Digest for 94-07-08

Dear Friends,

We apologize for the late transmission of this digest -- the past week has
been incredibly busy with our preparations for the Global Lecture Hall
videoconference yesterday. The 3 hour videoconference which was broadcast
throughout the world by satellite and by Internet (via CuSeeMe and mBONE)
was completed at 12:00 noon yesterday and appears to have been a big
success. Our own 20 minute presentation seemed to go ok and we have
received quite a few inquiries subsequent to the presentation about
'friends'.

We would like to thank Takeshi Utsumi and Aleksey Skuratov for the
invitation to participate in this global meeting. The meeting was an
amazing demonstration of technologies to accommodate "global distance
education". It was a real privilege to have had the opportunity to
participate.

Our presentation (www server + audio files) will be stored as a part of the
'friends' world wide web server and should be available sometime early next
week.

Once again, we find ourselves a bit behind on email (this is an
understatment) and will be trying to catch up over the next few days.
Thanks for your patience and Happy Friday!

Subject: World Bank and EBRD?

I need some information from anyone that may know of two
groups that may be involved with loans from the the World
Bank or EBRD. The Russian Privatization Center in Moscow is
in the process of selecting procurement agents for a long
term project for services to the Center. They have engaged
the services of a firm in Washington DC to help in the
selection process.

through to him. I now always get back the following message:

I appreciate any help that anyone can give.

Thanks,

Subject: brochure in Russian about advertising

Available at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colo., is a short pamphlet
about how to write an effective classified ad. The pamphlet is in Russian
and contains a statement that allows anyone to reproduce it. Originally, this
was written for some Bulgarians. The thinking at the time was that the days
of big display advertising in independent newspapers still was a ways off.
Instead, independent publishers would be better advised to concentrate on
short, cheap classified ads. The reasoning also seems to be valid in Russia,
which is why the pamphlet was translated into Russian. We all know that state
subsidies and the lack of consumer advertising are bid problems for the
developing Russian press. The pamphlet contains a lot of salesmanship and
advertising principles for its small size. The right to reproduce recognizes
the difficulty many Russians have in obtaining more conventional books. If
any member of this list or anyhone else would like a copy of the pamphlet,
"Short But Effective", please send me an e-mail.

in the above, please make the phrase read: lack of consumer advertising are big
(stead bid) problems for the developing Russian press.

Subject: Conference

I am a Professor of Computer Science at Drexel University and have
been asked to be on the organizing committee for the Parallel
Computing Technologies (PaCT) conference in Russia in 1996.

Past conferences in this series have been first-rate --- roughly
comparable to the IEEE conferences on parallel processing, so it is a
real pleasure to be on the organizing committee. I am concerned about
the possibility of finding funding/sponsorship for this conference. I
would very much appreciate any pointers people might have to possible
sources of funding These could be government programs, corporate
sponsors, etc.

Thank you!

Subject: NIS secondary school e-mail addresses

We have had several requests recently from American educators looking to
establish e-mail contacts with secondary schools in the NIS. We are in the
process of putting together a resource list to respond to such requests.

Does anyone on Friends & Partners know of organizations in the U.S. or NIS
that help establish US-NIS school email partnerships? Are there Friends &
Partners subscribers who have established such a partnership and would be
willing to share their experience with others?

The resource list we envision would include contact information for
individuals and organizations who could help identify potential email partners
for schools in the U.S. or NIS. We would also like to include a brief list of
tasks and potential bottlenecks educators should consider as they seek to
establish an email partnership.

When completed we would like to post the information we collect onto the
Friends & Partners server.

We welcome any and all suggestions,

Subject: US law school in Kiev?

Has anyone heard of a law school taught by American professors and
primarily for American students being set up in Kiev? I have a nephew who
has received second hand info on this topic and is seeking more
information. Apparently the idea is to begin an international school by
first attracting qualified pre-law grads from America (having passed the
LSATS, etcs.) My nephew, Charles Arline, has expressed interest in
attending such a school, but has been able to find nothing more on it. Any
help would be appreciated on this. Thanks.....
