Subject: Back from Siberia
Greetings,
I have just returned from a six week trip to Tomsk, Omsk, Ekaterinburg,
Chelyabinsk and Moscow, where we performed a bilingual production of
A Midsummer Night's Dream. I will share details with people who are
interested, but I just want to mention one event that seemed somehow
symbolic of where Russia is right now.
We were in Chelyabinsk on the 12th of June, which is the new Independence
Day. It seemed that most people haven't really decided how to celebrate
this new holiday, but there was a parade and a music festival in the
park. Most of the store were closed, but there were lots of street
vendors. But the thing that really struck me was the horse-drawn
carriage in the parade with a man dressed as Lenin sitting next to
a man dressed as tsar Nicholas. They were smiling and waving to the
crowd which seemed to to be mostly ignoring the parade in favor of
looking at what the street vendors had for sale.
I heard several times from my Russian friends that it is important
to them that the past be remembered - that Russia has made the mistake
too many times of revising or ignoring its history. They didn't think
it was at all strange to see the Tsar and Lenin riding together.

Jim Cashel from eurasia.org wrote on June 24th;
"We belive that we all have no future without our
kids, they are our "tomorrow" and the "world of tomorrow" must be happy
and free. "
This was from a letter he received from the School of Tomorrow.
As some of you know, I am a very grateful member of the world-wide
fellowship of Al-Anon which is a support group for those whose lives have
been affected by someone else's drinking. (Alcoholics Anonymous, also
known as AA, is for the drinker). The Al-Anon program is currently in
approximately 30 countries, including Russia and some of the other
members of the CIS.
Alateen, part of Al-Anon, is for children whose lives have been affected
by someone else's drinking, usually a parent.
The problem of alcoholism is rampant in the USA and, apparently, is even
worse in the various parts of the CIS.
I'm thinking that this School of Tomorrow, since they are wise enough to
realize that the children of the world are our future, if they might be
interested in learning more about the Al-Anon/Alateen program.
The problem of alcoholism is rampant in the USA and, apparently, is even
worse in the various parts of the CIS.
I would like to offer my services to anyone interested in learning more
about the Al-Anon/Alateen program with a view to starting the program in
their area. It is a self-supporting fellowship and there are no dues or
fee for membership.

Subject: Ural Youth Center of Intellectual Development
Dear Mr Cole,
Ural Youth Center of Intellectual Development was formed in
1990 as an innovative educational organisation to meet the
growing demand for alternative education based on a broader
and more positive approach. Since that time Youth Center has
gained experience in setting up experimental classes for teaching
different subjects on the basis of specially compiled advanced
programs, in providing education in the field of economics, law
and psychology, in rendering financial support to gifted children,
in attracting and training young people who are committed to
intellectual leadership in Schools of Young Leaders. Youth Center
prepares for future careers would-be economists, managers,
specialists in law, political science and sociology by giving

their chosen career field.
Youth Center has close links with the leading scientists, best

is the founder of the scientific technical college ''Systema''
and Republican Association of ''School of Democratic Culture''.
Now we are looking for overseas study opportunities and considering
the possibility to send our most talented and hard-working students
to do a full-time undergraduate degree course at American
Universities. We undertake to pay the fee for the education of our
prospective undergraduates. We understand that our applicants can
only be admitted to your Universities or colleges in 1995.
We would be most grateful if you could help us in any way or
suggest any organisations or groups that deal with this.
Thank you for whatever help you can provide.
Sincerely yours,
Vladlen Mramorov,
The Managing Director.

Subject: Art. for FRIENDS in US
Hello, my name is Andrew Lipov.
I am 25 years old inhabitant of Moscow. I was graduated from
Moscow Institute of Radiotechnic Electronic and Automatic in
1992. Since 1992 I am on my post graduate education. My
scientific direction is intellectual control systems. But my
interests are also in economic and business fields, because
scientific activity is not profitable in Russia now. I want offer
my service in consulting your business activity in Moscow in
following directions:
1. Detecting the most profitable business in Russia.
The conclusion will be done on basis of analysing your desire,
possibility and current Russian market condition.
2. Checking out the honesty of your future partner. My own
relations with special services allow me to predict (with some
probability) negative situations.
3. Help in Russian bank selection. There are about 2200 banks in
Russia. The most interesting information about bank is not
only life time, money quantity, level of service but also
information about real owners of bank - criminals or not.
4. Help in partner selection. I can help also to find out partner
for you or arrange the advertisement company.
Yours truly, Andrew Lipov.

I have some thought about cyberspace which I would like to share with you.
1 the democratic aspect
Everyone is equal. This is a very important part of the internet at least so
far. One cannot reject out of hand an idea because it comes from a graduate
student, an assistant professor, or someone not in the discipline. The
openess of communication is something that has to be protected.
Moderated lists, referred electronic journals, etc., will all eventually
cut down the openness which we all now enjoy.
2 freedom of materials
One forget about the origins of the copyright law ( jefferson) it was
designed to protect the author not the publisher. For example I can no
longer get copies of my own articles duplicated for students since the
publisher and not me owns the copyright.
The original idea of the copyright law was to protect the creators in the
age when author generally paid a printer to print the materials.
We have now turned the intent of the law around to actually penalized the
original authors.
I like your mode of publication and hope that the internet will continue to
allow us this kind of freedom.
3 referrd journals
Peer review is really only another form of censorship. the electronic
journal does offer the possiblity to get out of the peer review trap but
alreay we wont seem to let ourselves do this, we want peer review and
moderated lists etc.
4 the printed journal as we know it is really quite dead.
we need to express these and other ideas and try as much as possible to keep
cyberspace free.
your efforts are in the positive direction but the acacdemic community works
hard to underminew these with the current discussions about
How do cyberspace publciations count for p+t decisions?
How should referred journals be controlled?
Hou should access to the internet be controlled?
Please send this to whomever you wish.
