Daily Digest for 94-06-15
Dear Friends,
A couple of news items for today's digest . . .
First, we would like to express our appreciation to Sun Microsystems
Computer Corporation for their generous support of "Friends and Partners"
with an equipment grant made this week for our server in Knoxville,
Tennessee. Sun donated memory and a multi-media kit which provides
additional capability for our central server and which permits us to begin
working with audio and video applications. We will demonstrate use of such
in the presentation on F&P at the Global Lecture Hall international
teleconference on July 7.
We are *so* grateful to Sun for their support of this project and thankful,
also, for their continued interest in providing equipment for the mirror
server in Pushchino (more news on this later).
Second, we've reached another small milestone in activity on the F&P
server. We welcomed our 800th subscriber this past weekend (now up
to about 815) and transmitted our 1.5 billionth byte of information!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT'S NEW . . .
* From the language page on the WWW server, you can now hear Natasha's
voice pronounce each of the characters of the Russian alphabet. We have
"hooked" this in with our Russian alphabet graphic file (available from
the language page). For those folks with a direct IP connection and
using one of the graphic WWW browsers, just click on a character
and you will hear the pronunciation.
This is our first step towards providing a larger language server in which
basic vocabulary and structure of the Russian language will be introduced
with text, graphics, and with audio. We will have a large part of this
language server ready in time for the July 7 Global Lecture Hall
international teleconference -- where it will be demonstrated as an
example of using mixed-media for educational applications.
We welcome suggestions and offers of help from those who would like to
assist in development of an Internet-based Russian language server.
NOTE: the backlog of email which we have both been hacking away at for two
weeks now is almost gone now and, thus, we will be getting back to
furthering development of the WWW server soon. We realize the "What's New"
section has been a little absent lately!

Subject: Russia physical/cultural geography textbook
Dear Friends:
I will be teaching a physical and cultural geography course this Fall
semester. I have been in touch with the major book companys as well
as going through books in print to find a suitable text for the class.
We not only study Russia per se, but also include the old members of the
USSR. I have taught this course before, but spent much of the time
going over history. Do any of the "Friends" know of a possible textbook?
I have several leads which I am currently checking. But, I'd like to
have some input from you!

Subject: Moscow/St.Petersburg
Greetings from Morgantown High School in Morgantown, West
Virginia.
Two high school teachers (journalism and social studies) are
getting ready to study in Russia from July 6-22. Our first stop will
be eight days in Moscow at the Moscow State Pedigogical University.
Would like some information about the university. The remaining part
of the trip will be in St. Petersburg.
We are planning to establish some contacts with other educators
while in Russia. All help would be greatly appreciated. We are new at
Internet.

Subject: Video tapes
Greetings from Canada!
I am trying to obtain video tapes, on the PAL system, of movie classics in
English. The reason is quite simple. A friend of mine works in the
English language department of Saratov State University. They try to use
english language movies to supplement their course studies. I am
disappointed that the only movies I see making their way from the west
are "Robocop, "Terminator", etc.
What I would like to do is try to get some movie classics that they could
use. Does anyone know where I can purchase such movies on PAL, sources in
Moscow, the west, etc? perhaps there is someone that could donate such
classics?
Drop me a line with your thoughts, etc. Spasibo!

Subject: .Gif's of Russia?
Hi Everybody,
I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, so please forgive me if
this is a FAQ. Can someone tell me the names of a few good FTP sites
where I could download some nice gifs? I'm looking for small 125K to
medium 300K size files, Black and white or color, preferably of
the more populated cities ( Moscow, St.Petersburg, etc.) Thanks for
any help!
Art

NOTE: we are also interested in this (and would love to make collections
of such available via our WWW (and/or) FTP servers. We will
be posting a few such files from our recent trip to Russia.

Dear Greg,
Thanks for getting the word out! I've already received four
responses, 2 by email and one by telephone - amazing. I'll
definitely let you know about other programs as they come along.
ACTR has been expanding exponentially the past few years and
we're getting several new grants a year.
Best regards,
Dana

If anyone has contacts in universities in Ukraine (or other xSU
countries), you might want to make them aware of the services outlined
below. I spoke with Dr. Torio regarding activities in Ukraine and she
said they have yet to make contacts there. Ideally, they would like the
receiving institution to provide them with a "wish list" - anything
ranging from specific book and journal requests to "We'll take anything!"
- rather than sending stuff "blind."

Updated: June, 1994
ACS PROJECT BOOKSHARE
The American Chemical Society's Project Bookshare provides a
means for individuals and organizations in the U.S. to donate
chemistry books, back volumes of journals, and non-print media to
libraries in colleges and universities in the United States and
other countries. Although the project focuses on libraries in
other countries, some small colleges in the U.S. which are not
state-supported are also eligible. Recently, efforts have been
made to assist libraries at institutions in Eastern European
countries where there is a critical need for scientific litera-
ture. Any recipient institution must offer a program that leads
to a B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree in chemistry. The materi-
als must be placed in libraries that are generally accessible to
students as well as to faculty members. Shipping costs must be
borne by donors and recipients, not the ACS.
All materials donated to Project Bookshare should be in good
condition, i.e., free of insects, stains, molds, not mutilated,
etc. Project Bookshare accepts chemistry books not more than ten
years old, as well as conference proceedings published as books.
Complete years of many journal titles will also be accepted.
Preference is given to journal runs of at least five consecutive
years. Project Bookshare is especially interested in those
titles on the ACS Committee on Professional Training (CPT) list
of recommended journals, a list which the CPT uses in conjunction
with the evaluation of departments seeking ACS accreditation of
undergraduate degree programs in chemistry. Volumes of Chemical
Abstracts, the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry, and other
classic reference works are also welcome, regardless of the dates
of publication.
The American Chemical Society's Project Bookshare was initi-
ated in 1984. Donations first began to be accepted in 1985. The
activities of Project Bookshare are monitored by a subcommittee
of the ACS Joint Board-Council Committee on International Activi-
ties. The current chair of the subcommittee is Tracy
Primich, Chemistry Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
All donations to the ACS Project Bookshare must be approved
before shipment. Prospective donors should submit a list to Dr.
Joyce Torio at the Office of International Activities, American
Chemical Society, 1155 Sixteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
20036. The list should include for books the titles, author(s),
and dates and for journals, the titles and dates. Dr. Torio can
be reached by phone at 202-872-4548 or by FAX at 202-872-6206.
(Also, 800-227-5558, then press 0 and ask for extension 4548.)

Global Computer Communications for the
Environment, Human Rights, Development & Peace
WHAT IS APC?
============
The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is a
worldwide partnership of member networks dedicated to providing
low-cost computer communications services for individuals and
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working for environmental
sustainability, universal human rights and social and economic
justice.
APC enhances the effectiveness of local, indigenous
organizations by encouraging expertise in computer networking.
Problems such as ozone depletion, violation of human rights,
deforestation, hunger and oppression need solutions. Regional,
national and gl obal solutions will only emerge from efficient
communications Q and thatUs what APC offers you.
All APC members are independent organizations that retain
full control of their network. Member networks pay a percentage
of their income to the APC Secretariat to diversify the growth of
the Association.
APC was the primary provider of telecommunications for
NGOs at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brasil, and in 1993 at the
United Nations World Conference on Human Rights in Austria.
Planning is underway to provide similar services in preparation
for the 1994 UN International Conference on Environment and
Development in Cairo, the 1995 UN World Conference on Social
Development in Copenhagen and the 1995 Fourth World Conference on
Women in Beijing.
SERVICES PROVIDED ON APC NETWORKS
=================================
Electronic Mail
Groups and individuals can send private messages to each
other instantly for less than the cost of postal mail, with
greater dependability than a phone and more flexibility than a
fax! Quick, inexpensive, reliable, secure and easy to use, APCUs
electro nic mail accesses 16,000 international peace and
environmental users on our networks in 94 countries, and millions
of users on other networks, including Internet and Bitnet.
Electronic Conferences
The conference ("electronic bulletin board") is an
indispensable tool that enables any number of users to:
o assemble information from many sources;
o collaborate on research, writing, and planning;
o distribute and respond to "Action Alerts";
o use the latest tools in group communication and event
coordination; and
o communicate with ease on any subject despite being
continents apart.
-- Public Conferences --
APC offers hundreds of conferences containing a wealth of
information. These include events calendars, newsletters,
legislative alerts, press releases, action updates and
late-breaking stories -- as well as interactive dialogue. This
allows users to par ticipate in and influence worldwide
discussion on the most vital issues of our time.
-- Private Conferences --
Private conferences can be set up for any organization in
order to facilitate internal group decision-making, information
exchange to select colleagues, task-sharing processes or
sensitive communications.
Databases
Online databases include alternative publications,
bibliographies, grant-making foundations, Third World Resources,
Greenpeace Press Releases, Agenda 21, Shortwave Radio
Transcripts, United Nations Information Service, and Pesticide
Information Service. Database tools help you easily search for
specific information.
HOW ENVIRONMENTAL & PEACE GROUPS ARE USING THE APC NETWORKS
===========================================================
On a typical day users of APC are doing the following:
o At a meeting in Australia, the trustees of an organization need a
12-page report to proceed with an agenda item, but the only copy
is in England. Within half an hour they have the entire report in
hand for less than the cost of postage.
o The editor of a newsletter in Brasil receives article submissions
online, eliminating the need to key in the desired articles
herself.
o A solidarity group in England updates itself on events of the last
few days in Central America (in English or Spanish) and sends a
message to the project it supports in El Salvador.
ARE THE NETWORKS WIDELY CONNECTED?
==================================
Electronic mail can be exchanged with MCI mail, Internet,
HandsNet, FidoNet, Dialcom, Bitnet, UUCP, GeoNet, CompuServe and
most other academic or commercial networks. You can send and
receive telex, and send fax messages directly from the APC
Networks.
WHAT IF I NEED HELP TO USE IT?
==============================
Our system is designed to be quick and easy to use. We will help
you every step of the way, supplying step-by-step user manuals
and online and telephone help. Some APC members can provide
assistance and training in the purchase, installation and use of
equipment.

MODERN MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING
Course Material in Russian
Since more than three years teachers at the universities in
Uppsala and Umea, Sweden, have been working on a translation
from Swedish to Russian of a course material in management
accounting intented for distance education. The material is
used in first year training of students of Business Admini-
stration at Uppsala University. It gives a good basic know-
ledge about the fundamentals of managing a business company
under normal free market conditions.
We are happy to announce that the complete course package is
now ready for delivery. The material consists of three parts:
Part 1: Financial Accounting
Part 2: Product and Investment Costing
Part 3: Accounting for Cost Flows
Each part consists of a textbook, an exercise book with
solutions and 4-6 audio cassette tapes with recorded teacher
comments on key exercises.
The translations have been produced with support from several
Swedish companies investing in the Russian market. Support has
also been received from The Swedish Institute and The Swedish
Board for Investment and Technical Support (BITS), Stockholm.
The material is currently being used by the St. Petersburg
University of Economics and Finance in collaboration with
Uppsala University in courses for their students but also in
retraining programmes for military officers leaving the Russian
armed forces.
