Daily Digest for 94-06-08

Dear friends,

We are pleased to announce a new section of the "friends and partners" WWW
server -- and another example of a WWW server established by one of the F&P
subscribers. As mentioned in his email note below, Alan Boyle has
established a WWW server entitled "New Media for a New World" in which he
provides a very attractive, well organized presentation on a conference he
is organizing in Moscow this summer. This server is available from the
"meetings" page which is available from the "funding and exchange" section
of F&P.

We are grateful to Alan for his work in putting this together -- and
congratulate him on creating what is really a very nice resource -- it sets
a new standard for publishing information on meetings and conferences.

We wish to remind others who wish to create similar "servers" that we will
be *most* happy to help you get started.

Subject: New World Web

Dear Friends: Thanks to Greg and Natasha, I've been able to
put together a little Web document providing information about
our upcoming conference in Moscow, "New Media for a New World."
You'll find it through F&P or at this URL:
http://solar.rtd.utk.edu/~aboyle/new.world.html
There are a few things I still need to do to it,
but I hope you'll find it interesting, even if you can't join
us July 27-Aug. 2 in Moscow. If you're not a Webrunner yet,
you can get conference info by e-mailing to me at
glasnews@eskimo.com. Harriedly yours (as always), Alan Boyle

Greetings and Thanks for all of your tenacious work to bring the world
together!

I have the following requests:

I will be traveling to Moscow this summer with the hopes of returning to
live there next year. My focus will be intensivly learning the language
and the culture. I'd like to know:
1. How do I go about finding an affordable and good language school
2. How do I measure the effectiveness of their language program
3. How do I go about finding a tutor

I am a graduate student doing an independent study comparing Russian and
American Management styles and philosophies. Do anyone have ideas on
resources that has looked at this topic?

Thank you for your help and insights. I appreciate this opportunity to
"talk" with you!

I have a request from a Mountain and Volcanology Institute
in Khabarovsk for any and all e-mail addresses related
to their topics. Basically, they want any e-mail addresses
dealing with Geology and Volcanology: geological institutions,
volcano watch societies, geologists, any publications
or listservs. Anything they can work with would be helpful.

Sincerly,

Dear Friends,

Some three years ago I wrote a program which provides basic help for the
MS-DOS 5.0 commands. The program is interactive and very easy to use.
People say it is even friendly :-). I have two versions of it: In English,
and in Russian.

Anyone interested may drop me a message asking for a program(s). They are
free. I am willing to send them in UUENCODEd form. Please specify whether
you want English, or Russian version, or both. Size is ca. 100-120 kb.

All friends. . .

I have a friend in South Carolina, USA, who teaches deaf junior high
school students. He is proficient in sign language and many aspects of
deaf education. He has been to Russia twice, and is quite interested in
working with the deaf in Russia through teaching, etc. I would
appreciate any contacts or information that I could pass along to him
that he could investigate to further his desires to work with this
segment of the Russian people. Post to me at the address below, or to
Friends in general. Thanks so much.

Hello Scott,

I have collected several Russian tutor programs over the last year
from various sources. Some are good, others not so good. If you
would like, I will be happy to send a copy to you. Some are very
big ZIP files that I would have to send either UUENCODEd are from
my PC using the BASE64 format for an attached file.

Let me know if you are interested and how you want me to send it.

Subject: Moscow power supply

     Dear Andrew,

I have read your question about Moscow power supply - here are
some answers. In Moscow you will find only 220 V, 50 cycles. Almost
all laptop (notebook) computers now have power supplies that can
operate in the volatge range 110-240 V and frequency 50 or 60 Hz.
They will work just fine in Moscow. For a desktop, the situation is
worse, you need to check that the power supply installed in it has
220 V label, or a switch for using with 220 V. Of course, finally
you can find a transformer in Moscow that will convert 220 to 110,
and my experience shows that power supplies are not as sensitive to
frequency as some books say.

The question about the modem has no simple answers. I have no idea
how much money you can afford to spend for it. Cheap models often
cannot work well with very noisy lines, sad Moscow reality. Error
correction is a must, better if both MNP5 and V.42bis are available
(hardware, NOT software emulation!). I have good experience with
AT&T Dataport at 14,400, but this is a high end device. Practical
Peripherals at 2400 with MNP and V.42 also proved to be very
reliable here... On the other hand, Supra modems refuse to
operate... Try to ask at the store where you are going to bye a
modem, what would they recommend for a BBS located in a small
village with a bad telephone line and ancient telephone exchange...

And still it will be a question of your luck - in what area of
the city you will be staying. In some areas there will be no
problems at all, in some others you may forget about e-mail.

Speaking of e-mail. Before starting your trip, send e-mail to
support@glas.apc.org - User Support at GlasNet, a private Moscow
network will tell you how to open the account even before you come
to Moscow. Then, as soon as you come, you just dial the number and
login to GlasNet. You will have a mailbox there and the opportunity
to telnet to your computer in Australia.

     Good luck!

Hello Friends,

I subscribed to the list a few weeks ago, but haven't received any
traffic yet.

I am interested in corresponding with people in Russia & the former
SU for the following reasons:

1) just for net.chat and learning about each other's way of life. etc.

2) Exploring possibilities for trade at a low level. Things that are
plentiful here & scarce there & vice versa. Example of former:
Levi's. Example of latter: caviar, fur hats.

Any interested persons please contact me via private e-mail at

I would prefer to correspond via PGP-encrypted messages. My PGP public
