APPENDIX: LISTSERV address & basic procedures

WHAT'S NEW . . .

* We have placed a hook to the University System of Georgia's gopher
   server with information related to Eastern Europe and the Newly-
   Independent States. This is available from the "More Information
   Resources" page. Thanks to Jim Cashel of the Eurasia Foundation for
   bringing this to our attention.

   Items of interest include:

        * Political Information
        * Economic Data
        * Trade Leads
        * Databases - Eastern Europe and the NIS
        * Scholarly Papers
        * Grants & Funding Information
        * CURRENT News

* Pointer to U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Gopher
   Server from the "More Information Resouces" page and from the "Funding
   and Exchange" page.

* Mac Viers has provided us with an interesting program update on the
   Project on Economic Reform & Development in Central Asia (PERCDA). This
   is posted and available from the Economics page.

   From the document posted:

        The Project on Economic Reform and Development in Central
        Asia (PERDCA) encourages, facilitates and supports technical
        assistance (TA) efforts directed towards the Central Asian
        Republics of the former Soviet Union. PERDCA has been active
        with resident Western representation in Tashkent, Uzbekistan
        for more than a year. During this tumultuous period of
        economic and political transformation, PERDCA has reacted
        flexibly to the changing needs of the region with three
        types of programs to foster an environment for positive
        change: (1) Frameworks which enhance in-country coordination
        between TA groups; (2) Initiatives which enrich cooperation
        between the local and the foreign communities; (3) Networks
        which improve electronic communication and global
        interconnectivity.

* New issue of Za Nauku (94-04-22) available from the science page.

* New issue of RUSAG Current Events (94-04-22) available from the

Dear Beverly,
there is a Chi-Writer editor version with both cirillic and Kyrgyz
letters one can find in Bishkek. I used to use it when I was there two
years ago.

Subject: need help with extended cyrillic for DOS

 I'm trying to help a friend who just bought an IBM that she will
take home to Kirghizstan. She has a cyrillic font, but says she
can't find some of the characters. I think what she means is that
she can't find characters that are in Kirghiz, but not Russian. One
looks like a theta, and I think there are some diacritical marks.
Does anyone know of a font that contains this extended cyrillic alphabet?

Subject: Maps from the FSU

Greetings!

A friend and I are both pursuing Ph.D.Us in Geography at Clark University. We
have been trying to track down reliable and contemporary maps of the FSU.
After much sleuthing, we have found what appears to be just what we have been
looking for. As it has taken us much phone calls and research, we thought we
might be able to save others some time and hassle by sharing the connections we
have formed.

We have access to the following organizations and the following maps:

Komarov Botanical Institute
        Vegetation of the European part of the FSU (southern parts of St.
Petersburg, Vologda, Yaroslavl and Novgorod; parts of Kalinin, Pskov, Moscow,
Vladimir, Kostrama, Ivanovo, Kirov, Udmurtia, Komi, Marii-yel, Tatarstan,
Perm, and Smolensk oblasts; the western part of the Nenets NatUl Okrug.

        Geobotanical Map of Central European Russia
        Vegetation Map of Central Kazahkstan

Scientific Research Cartography Laboratory, Geography Department, MSU
        Erosional dangerous lands of the European part of FSU
        Soil map of the FSU
        Natural fee lands of the FSU
        Climate regionalization of the FSU
        Types of settlements of the FSU
        Ecological-geographical map of Russia

Apparently it is also possible to obtain regional maps from atlases of the NIS,
as well as Krai, and oblast scale maps.

If this information is useful and/or you have other questions, please contact
either of us at the following e-mail addresses:

Dmitry Varlyguin                                Jeremy Tasch
DVarlyguin@vax.clarku.edu               JTASCH@vax.clarku.edu

(p.s. Anybody out there have access to digitized map data of Russia, especially
Siberia? Administrative boundaries, land cover, so forth?)

Subject: my interests

To Whom it may Concern:
I am a Russian Orthodox priest, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA.
Before becoming a priest, I studied psychology, and received a Ph.D. in
psychology from the University of Chicago in 1971. I am interested in
corresponding with any Orthodox priests, any Russian psychologist, and
especially anyone interested in the relationship between the traditional
Orthodox understanding of human nature and human problems and the understanding
of contemporary psychologists. Although I can read Russian, I currently do
not have a cyrillic text reader, so I would ask for mail in English only.

More information on the Technology from Russia '94 conference

J. Spargo & Associates (703-631-6200) are the organizers and I got my
brochure by calling them. You may also want to fax a request at

As a brief overview, the session titles are this:
Tuesday, May 10
 - the US perspective
   -- The privitization process
   -- How to attract investment
   -- Sucessful solutions to doing business in Russia
 - the Russian Perspective
   -- Trade opportunities in Russia
   -- Investment opportunities in Russia
   -- Financial systems in Russia and the United States
Wednesday, May 11
 - US government assistance
 - Multilateral financing
Thursday, May 12
 - Investing in Russia
   -- Banking and convertibility of the Ruble
   -- Business taxation in Russia

   -- Sucessful solutions to doing business in the Russian market
 - Trading and Patents
   -- Russian customs regulations
   -- US customs regulations
   -- US and Russian standards regulations

The conference seems to be geared primarily to trade regulations and
opportunities between the US and Russia, but I'm sure the exhibitors
would be happy to talk about other possible cooperation. Hope this helps.
