Daily Digest for 94-04-11

Dear friends,

Today's 'digest' is a bit larger than usual. We normally try to keep this
as small as possible but we received an unusually large number of letters
on Friday and over the weekend.

We have received a number of suggestions about how to make the 'daily
digest' more useful to subscribers. We would like to receive further input
from you on what we should do to re-organize its contents, change the format or
frequency of issuance, etc. We will try to summarize the various
suggestions and get these back to you very soon.

There are several exciting things in progress at the moment that we will be
bringing news of shortly. Perhaps none is more exciting, though, to the
moderators of this list than the fact that we will be meeting each other in
just a few weeks (in answer to the question we often receive, we have never
met). My wife, Monica, and I will be making our first trip to Russia
soon where we will have opportunity to spend a week in Pushchino and work
with Natasha and her colleagues. We are MOST grateful to Drs. Dave Hake
and Evans Roth of UT Knoxville, whom we will be accompanying on the trip to
Russia, for making this possible.

One last very personal note -- tomorrow (Tuesday) is Natasha's birthday
(she will not see this version of the digest). While taking great
personal risk in making this announcement :-), I'm certain that any
birthday wishes that make their way to natasha@ibpm.serpukhov.su will
be warmly received and will make someone very happy!

Hope you can forgive the personal 'intrusions' -- we won't make a habit of
such!

APPENDIX: LISTSERV address & basic procedures

----------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT'S NEW . . .

* Natasha has prepared a collection of 4 books of over 220 poems by
poet Sasha Cherniy -- these poems are in Cyrillic text (KOI8
font) and include graphics which Natasha has incorporated.

* Radio Free Europe 1991 data is now available on the server -- both for
browsing by month and day but, more importantly, for full-text
searching. Available from the "news" page. NOTE: The 1992 data
should be available 'any day now' . . .

* An excellent listing of funding sources for work in the NIS has been
compiled by World Learning, Inc. and is made available from the
'funding and exchange' page. From their material:

"The sources of funding for activities in the NIS are many and varied. Unless
you know where to look and precisely what you are looking for it can be
confusing. In fact, in an ever-changing NIS environment, it is hard to know
where funding is with any precision. There are many PVOs looking to tap into
funds in the sectors of health, the private sector, democratic reform,
exchanges and training, and women's health. INTERACTION, an association of
U.S. PVOs, is seeking to coordinate and concentrate funding priorities for
the NGO community in these sectors. The following provides an overview of
some of these groups, their activities, and where available the $ amount of
   grants they may be distributing."

* New pointer to Romanian gopher in Bucharest, Romania -- available from
the "Central / Eastern European Resources" section on the "more info
   resources" page.

* The March 9, 1994 issue of the "Pen Pal Forum" is available from the
pen pal page (available from the 'life' and 'education' pages).

Subject: St. Petersburg Energy

I have a few questions about the St. Petersburg energy situation (and that
of the Leningrad oblast as a whole) for some research I am doing. I would
very much appreciate any information or pointers from readers of this
conference.

I am trying to find out about the energy distribution system in
St.Petersburg and the oblast. Who (or what organization) is in charge of
distribution? What are the area's energy consumption patterns? What
percentage comes from coal, oil, oil shale, gas, nuclear or other sources?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Subject: Moscow Musical School looks for a Canadian Sponsor

Hello Friends,

I am part of a french cultural association called Ruslan
(RUSsia + SLAvic LANguages and cultures).

Last year we organised a musical summer school for children
in a suburb near Paris were our Association is located.
Participants were Rachmaninov Musical school from Izmailovo
district of Moscow, and french and canadian Vivaldi musical
association. This summer school was a great success and french,
russian and canadian participants enjoyed it.

The same event will take place in Canada (Quebec) in july 1994
and in Moscow in july 1995 with the same participants.

However, due of financial problems, Rachmaninov school has very
poor chances to attend this year summer school. Their usual russian
sponsors cannot face expenses of a trip to Canada and thus need help.

I hope somebody from Canada reads friend's postings and can help.
Any ideas will be welcome.

Thanks a lot!

Subject: Grants for American to Travel to Russia

Greetings Friends & Partners,

Does anyone have information about sources of funding for Americans traveling
to Russia for technology/information transfer/exchange? I am in the field
of occupational safety and health, especially as it pertains to women's
reproductive health; my colleague is a nurse practitioner specializing in
women/mothers with HIV/AIDS. We have been facilitating the publication of
scientific manuscripts by Russian authors and the exchange of scientific
information otherwise.

We have received formal invitations to participate in a scientific conference
in Rostov on Don in September and to further discussions of future projects.
But we are in dire need of funds to support our travel. Any suggestions of
sources would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Friends,
I am looking for some information about a corporation called Miramed
(combination of Russian words for 'peace and medicine'). Started by a
Juliette Engel, MD to bring better medical care, mostly Obstetrical, to
Moscow and with plans for Kiev and St. Petersburg. She apparently is
working out of Moscow Municipal Hospital #70 - recently renamed Savior's
Hospital for Peace and Charity. She lives in the states part-time in
Bellvue Washington -(near Seatle). There was an article last October in
Money Magazine regarding her finances. Friends and I who were in Russia
last summer had the opportunity to see the medical care there first
hand, and we're looking for a way to go back and possibly volunteer some
time. We have not been able to reach her via Money. If anyone out there
could help it would be appreciated.
