WHAT'S NEW (and coming) . . .

* We have placed a link to the Electronic Frontier Foundation's
Gopher Service from the Telecommunications page. From their
introduction: "The EFF was founded in July of 1990 to ensure
that the principles embodied in the Constitution and the Bill
of Rights are protected as new communications technologies emerge.
Since its inception, EFF has worked to shape our nation's
communications infrastructure and the policies that govern it . . ."
There is lots of good information here related to telecommunications
   technologies and policy.

* We are working to complete the Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty
Daily Reports database covering the time period 1991 - 1993 and should
have this new resource available over the upcoming holiday weekend.
Our thanks to the good folks at RFE for allowing us to work with their
information and to John Lepingwell who has recently gathered together
all 3 years of data and placed them on our server. Watch this space Monday!

Subject: Re: Leningrad Library Fire

Dear Friends,

This note is in response to Richard Oliver's query (posted 3/29/94) about
whether a work by "Pseudo-Rufinus" was still in the holdings at the
Academy of Sciences Library in Leningrad/Petersburg. I want him to know
that this library is on-line now. The address is:

banspb@glas.apc.org

I have been in regular correspondence with people there for the last
several months. I think that a query about the status of the manuscript
will meet with a prompt reply.

Good luck!

I am interested in knowing whether there are any known email addresses
in Pskov or the surrounding area. If anybody knows for sure that there
are any,please e-mail me.
                Thanks,

Subject: H-RUSSIA, A LIST FOR HISTORY SCHOLARS

    Announcing H-RUSSIA
A new H-NET list on Russian history and culture.

Scholars are invited to subscribe by sending this message to
    LISTSERV@uicvm.uic.edu

sub H-Russia Firstname Lastname, Your College

I am hopeful that H-RUSSIA will quickly become the premier
list for serious discussion of Russia, the Soviet Union and
the successor states. If it does, it will be because the
members of the list share their scholarship, their insights,
and their questions. As moderator, I shall make every
effort to keep the flow of postings running smoothly.
We hope to start a book review program soon. If you are
available to review books, send a note to
    H-RUSSIA@uicvm.uic.edu

Subject: scanner software for Russian

Hi folks,

does any of you know of a software package that does OCR for cyrillic
characters? I am looking for something for the Mac, but DOS or Windows
software would be ok, too.

Thanks,
Angelika Meyer
