Daily Digest for 94-03-22

Greetings Dear Friends!

Today, we have much good news.

Natasha has completed implementation of a listserver in Pushchino which
is available to our friends in the countries of the ex-USSR -- and which,
for many, will lessen the high costs of the international network email
traffic.

We have two new databases available on the server. Thanks to the Citizens
Democracy Corps (and to Yelena Rom, in particular), we have the entire
5,000 record NIS Email directory available for searching now. Also, thanks
to the more than 100 who have thus far submitted their biodemo forms, we
have the new "friends" database available for searching.

We received word yesterday from Radio Free Europe in Munich that we will be
working with them on creation of a 3-4 year historical database of all
RFE/RL news items and also on electronically publishing several other
items. We are most excited about this development and about working
with the RFE organization.

then your letter will forward on friends@solar.rtd.utk.edu

If you have any difficults with this, please feel free to write
   us.:-)

* Thanks to the generosity of the Citizens Democracy Corps, we now have
the entire 5,000 record NIS Email directory on-line and available
for searching. This is available from the new "Who's Who" page which is
   available from the home page.

We will soon expand the searching / browsing options
for this resource to include browsing by name (alphabetically),
geographic region (country and city), and by organization. We also
hope to expand the searching options to allow for fielded searching.

We wish to thank the CDC for making this possible, Yelena Rom in
particular for her efforts (and for being so nice to work with), and
to Dave Johnson at UT Knoxville for providing us with the initial
lead on this important information resource.

This is step one towards creation of a comprehensive "who's who" database
of people / resources living in / working with the countries of
the FSU, Baltics, and Central/Eastern Europe.

* We have already received over 100 of the biographical
forms from our "friends" subscribers. The forms have been
organized into a WAIS database which is available from the
"Who's Who" page. The diversity of interests and capabilities
of this list's membership is impressive and interesting to
browse! We feel certain that this database will become, over
time, one of our most important resources.

* In a very encouraging telephone conversation yesterday with Pierre
Balliett and Folkert Van Karssen of the Radio Free Europe in Munich,
we received the good news that we will be jointly publishing a
WAIS database of the last 3-4 years of the RFE/RL daily bulletins.
We intend to make this available within the next few days and hope
that this will become a very useful research / reference tool.

We are most grateful to Pierre, Folkert, and to John
Lepingwell (who helped us with the initial contacts for this
venture and who has been a real pleasure to work with).

We will also be working with RFE on electronically publishing portions
of their other reports and publications.

Previot,

I am a Doctorand at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in
Zuerich, Switzerland. I conduct research in the field of computer
vision, especially the understanding and conversion of line images.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone in the former Soviet
Republics or Russia who is interested in these topics.

I would also like to hear from anyone there who is interested in
discussing over Switzerland, avant garde theatre/film, or the literature
of Eastern Europe, or ...

It is okay to write in English, German, French, and perhaps Russian,
though my Russian reading and writing skills are rather poor, especially my
transliteration of Russian to the Latin alphabet, as you can see...

Dear Friends and Partners,

First and foremost, I wish to thank Natasha and Greg for taking the initive
to set up this Friends and Partners communication program, may you both
reap bountiful rewards for embarking on such a far reaching enterprize.
It is for me the answer to a life long dream/wish to reunite with our
friends and families of the Greek and Roman Catholic Church in Russia and
America, and at the same time research the history of my Dominican Third
Order Family, and in particular Anna and Valadimir Abrikosov (1882-1936).

I am an alumni and retired staff member of the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst, and am now free and eager to pursue and establish this life
fong ambition.

But to do this I need help. I need names and addresses (e-mail and residence)
of people in Russia and America who are familiar with the history of the faith
during the above mentioned time period.

I will also need name and addresses (e-mail and residence) of volunteers
who would be willing to spend a short time each day translating (Russian/
English and vice versa) daily scripture messages, small books, pamphlets,
prayer cards, as well as sharing/exchanging personal inspriational thoughts
about the faith and history of the Greek and Roman Catholic Church.

Also, I would like to establish e-mail communication with Fr. Alexander
Khmelnitsky in Moscow. He edits a VERITAS ET VITA from an office in Moscow
(105215 Moscow P.O. Box 38 or 105094, Moscow, Seminonovskaya nab., 3/l-1-41).

Thank you/spasibo, God bless you, as I eagerly await hearing from all.

Subject: INTERNET /E-MAIL in CIS countries

Greetings from California,
My name is Michael Potikian. I am trying to find everything that is
possible about Internet in the CIS countries. Is anybody aware of any ftp
sites that contain files with listings of Internet sites in CIS countries?
Another question that I have relates to RELCOM listings.
It is possible to subscribe and receive listings that could be found on
Usenet through the Internet. But since they appear to be encoded - to
get to see the Russian letters will take a bit more then a viewer. The
listings as I understand, should somehow be decoded.
Could you or perhaps other subscribers - comment on these issues.
Thank you for your work on F&P project.
Truly yours,

Michael Potikian
