Daily Digest for 94-03-21
Dear friends,
We continue to receive the biographical data forms and are organizing these
into a searchable, 'browseable' database which we hope will be available
tonight or tomorrow. The variety of interests, areas of expertise, and
professional affiliations is amazing. Thanks to the many who have already
forwarded this information -- we are excited about making this important
resource available to you.
We celebrated our two month 'birthday' this past Saturday (March 19) and
received our 600th subscriber to the listserv on that day. We continue
to be amazed and grateful for the interest shown in this service and
promise our determined efforts over the coming months to improve the
information content of the server and to continue to help facilitate new
opportunities for friendship and work together.
Lots of good things on the way!

Subject: Posting: GIS Interest or Activities?
I am interested in corresponding with anyone in any part of the former
Soviet Union who is interested in or better yet, is working with
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS). Ultimate purpose is to share
skills, etc in a "technology transfer" mode, with emphasis on both
near-term and long-term practical applications of this technology.
Use of what ever means of communication is most practical is fine,
although E-mail is preferred and of course faster than most other
formats.
Our firm, Century Technologies, Inc is a privately held, minority
owned business, providing professional information systems services.
We have been in business since 1977 and have approximately 300
employees in the U.S.
My position is a VP/Director level and includes both operations and
business development responsibilities. Some of the international
programs which may have funding under the USAID or Nunn-Lugar
ammendment are of interest to us. Interest in cooperation other than
GIS would also be welcome.
Thank you.

I am an engineer at Fiberoptic Measuring Instrumentation manufacturing
company in Oregon and I am trying to promote our product to the Russian
market.I have been informed recently that New York-based Corning Inc. has
reached an agreement with All Russian Scientific Institute of the Cable
Industry to supply the fiber optic cable for upgrading Russian telephone
services. Our company is the world leader in optical fiber measurement
instrumentation for the fiber optic cable industry. Corning Inc. is one
of our valuable customers. We supply them our products throughout the
world. I am interested in discussing of the possible assistance and
involvement of our company in supplying test equipment for the purchased
optical fiber and new developed telephone lines. Our company already has a
successful experience in dealing with Russia in the past.
Also, I am looking for some business contacts in Russia and particularly I
am interested in developing food export operations. Currently I am trying
to locate so called "Bonded Warehouses" in Vladivostok or in that area.
If you have some information, please, respond.
Thank you in advance.

DEFENSE LEADERS AGAINST BUDGET CUTS. Representatives of Russia's
defense enterprises, meeting with government leaders in Moscow on
11 and 12 March, criticized proposed reductions in Russia's arms
procurement budget for 1994, Interfax and ITAR-TASS reported.
Conference participants, who were said to include First Deputy
Prime Minister Oleg Soskovets, former CIS Joint Forces Commander
Evgenii Shaposhnikov, and First Deputy Defense Minister Andrei
Kokoshin, warned that the reductions could hurt some 15-20 million
Russian employees of the defense industries and undermine national
security. Interfax reported that a sitting chaired by Soskovets on
11 March had adopted a decision to maintain the volume of last
year's procurement, but it was unclear if that was a decision
binding upon the government. Stephen Foye, RFE/RL, Inc.

Dear friends,
I am working on a piece for Sergei Grigoriev dealing with the
treatment of Russian minorities (especially Jews) by the government as
well as the media.
Mr Grigoriev has advised me to concentrate on the expulsion of
minority groups from Moscow in October and November of 1993.
I would be appreciative of any suggestions and assistance. I am
interested in newspaper articles as well as references to potential
research gold mines.
I can be reached either through this e-mail address or my own
