Subject: Information on Medical Help
Greg,
I had intended my first e-mail to F&P to be one of congratulations
instead of a plea for help. My name is Alex Cook and I am a Systems
Analyst for the College of Engineering & Mines at the University of
Arizona. My wife and I hosted some Russian students in our home a little
while ago and were able to visit with them and their families in Murmansk
in return. We met a lot of fine people and made new friends up on the
Kola Peninsula. We have recently found out that the nephew of one of our
new friends was involved in a terrible lab accident and she is asking for
any kind of medical/rehabilitative aid we can send their way. The young
man is 23 and was a student in the Khar'kov Aviation Institute. An
explosion during an experiment has cost him both hands and his sight.
They sent me a copy of the medical report but it's slow going trying to
translate all the particulars. Reading ANY doctor's handwriting can be
difficult - but in RUSSIAN!! Anyway, I've read a few messages in the
digests from American physicians wanting to contact their opposite
numbers in Russian so perhaps there are some medical people out there
with knowledge of organizations that deal with prostheses and
rehabilitation and some sort of sight restorative surgery. I don't know
how much they can afford to spend (you all know the inflation rate in CIS
at this time) or whether they can send him here (to the U.S.). We lived
in Jacksonville, FL before we moved back to Tucson and I know that the
Sister City program there has facilitated the transport of a great deal of
medical supplies and equipment and has even exchanged medical teams to
train Murmansk doctors how to use the equipment and newer technology.
Are there medical groups that travel to Russia and give treatment for free?
Any information will be gladly accepted. My Internet address is:
cook@bigdog.engr.arizona.edu
I eagerly await your responses.
Thank you,
Alex Cook

Dear Greg and Natasha,
Thanks for all the great work on Friends & Partners which has generated so
much interesting information! I'm writing to find out if it is possible for
you to include information on job opportunities and to post resumes on your
Freinds and Partners network. The only internet service I know of that does
this sort of thing concerns itself almost exclusively with positions for
computer experts. I think such a service could be a tremendous support for
those of us in the field of former Soviet Union and Central and East European
affairs who are either looking for employees or for job openings in this field.
Please let me know if you will be willing to include such material on your
network, and, if so, how to access it.
Thank you for your help!

NOTE: This is a good idea and we will try, over the weekend, to create
a new 'page' where folks can post both opportunities and resumes.
We will send information about this new service on Monday.
The following message from Tatiana echos the same request.

Subject: 'Classified Section'
Greg:
It might be a good idea to establish a 'Classified Section' within the
'white pages', where those looking for employment could post their resumes
or whatever information they choose, and prospective employers could place
job announcements. This 'positions sought'--'positions available' duet
would work for both US and Russia: there is a lot of people with
Russia-related skills looking for job opportunities here, and I know there
are Americans, mostly recent college graduates, who would like to get a job
in Russia. This might be a great way to find one's PARTNER, in addition to
finding a FRIEND, through your network.
Take care.
Tatiana.

Subject: New Russian Import Duties
Dear Friends,
I heard recently that the Russians are going to be raising import duties
significantly, particularly on computer products. If anyone has more
concrete information on this subject (such as a copy of the new tariff
schedule and the date that it will take force) I would greatly
appreciate hearing from them. This issue is very important for our
business.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Subject: greetings...
Hi, Greg! Zdractvyite, Natasha!
I'm a computer science college teacher in northeast Vermont of Russian
heritage. I've recently been 3 times to Petrozavodsk, attending a seminar in
the Spring od 1990 and then teaching there for a semester in the Fall, 1991 and
for 6 weeks in the Spring, 1993, I have been collaborating informally with the
Institute of New Technology, Moscow in developing new curricula in computer
science for K-12 ("Informatica").
I am interested in particpating in joint projects...am interested in Russian
folk songs (love to sing them), philosophy, tennis and Russian language in
addition to the culture and beautiful people...(and, I confess, especially
women).
I would especially like software to write e-mail in Russian from my
MacIntosh
(also PC). And, would like to find software for the MacIntosh for helping
someone write Russian letters (similar to programs I've seen for Spanish and
French (Language Assistant). Also, a dictionary-lookup software for the Mac
(like LINGVA, Russian software for the PC) that would enable me to point to a
word on my screen in English and find the RussiAn equivalent(s) and vice-verca.
Also, I'm interested in using the internet to communicate with Russians,
especially in education projects...
All the best, please keep in touch!

Dear Ms. Bulashova:
My name is Ben Gill and I work for the University of Minnesota. I found your
name in connection with "Friends and Partners" on the Internet, and I am hoping
you could answer some questions I have about Russia and E-mail.
We are working with the Institute of Pedagogical Innovation in Moscow, and would
like to open an Internet accout for them. We are looking for any information on
how to do this--expense, difficulty, sending mail in Russian or English,
etc--but we are not sure where to find this information. We would greatly
appreciate any help you could give us with this, or even to point us to someone
who could help us.
Thank you for your time.
