WHAT'S NEW . . .
We have replaced the method by which users can search the daily
digests. The WAIS gateway we were 'pointing' to was no longer
working so we have replaced this with our own gateway.
You can now search the daily digests for any word, phrase, name,
email address, etc. by selecting the appropriate search item from
the 'daily digests' page.
We have also replaced the gateway used for searching the
RFE/RL bulletins. This is still considered a trial service but we are
hoping to announce its permanence soon.

Subject: Re: login trouble / student exchange programs
Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for the assistance on accessing your telnet
site. My name is Tom Dzicek I am a teacher in Coventry, CT at the Capt.
Nathan Hale Middle School. I have been involved with student exchanges
with schools in Moscow for the past 5 years. What began as an attempt to
acquire pen-pals in the "snail mail" days, escalated beyond my wildest
dreams with the first exchange occurred. Thanks to internet on both
sides, communication is flowing between our school and our exchange
schools.
I have applied for and have received several grants to assist in our
exchange efforts. In Sept. of 1994 we will host 16 Russian middle school
students, team them with 16 of my students and then do a joint project
involving model rockets and space. The entire group will journey to
Washington, DC to the Air and Space Museum, then the group will go to
Florida and attend Space Camp. This project has caused a great deal of
excitement on the part of everyone in my school and of course in our
Russian exchange school.
I worked with the Connecticut State Dept. of Education on a grant
that enabled us to bring 130 Russian students to CT for 3 weeks and to
send the same number of CT students over to Moscow.
So, with that as a background, I am very much interested in you site
and the information it has to offer.
I just wanted to say thanks for helping me access the site, I am sure
I will have a bunch of questions later on, but for now thanks for your help.
Best of luck

Subject: Re: Daily Digest for 94-03-07
Natasha and Greg,
Just a few thoughts in response to the latest posting...
) * We are in process of re-designing our 'home page', creating a new
) map (which, among other things, will include the US State of Alaska!),
) and providing new 'buttons' to point to a reorganized view of the
) Friends and Partners WWW server.
)
) We are hoping to work with one of our subscribers on a better visual
) design and organization of the server and with two artist friends who
) have offered to help us with the graphics.
)
) We welcome your comments and suggestions about how to best
) organize the server so that users can most easily find information.
One minor problem I've had with the current home page is that the "black on
blue" text/background combination has too little contrast to be readable.
This is obviously monitor-specific (or have others had similar problems?)
but perhaps it can be addressed. Perhaps the "buttons" could become hyperlinks
like most other home pages, in addition to or instead of "buttons".
) * We are most excited about the very real prospect that we will soon be
) able to provide a complete 'mirror' of the F&P WWW server and the
) FRIENDS listserv in Pushchino, Russia. We are working with a
) generous organization who will hopefully be providing the needed
) equipment.
)
) This is significant for a number of reasons -- but, primarily, because it
) will enable a much greater degree of access for our friends in Russia and
) other nations of the FSU. The speed and cost of the international
) connections makes the service too expensive and too slow for effective
) use.
This sounds like a great step.
My question, though, is related not to the project but to the wording. I've
seen the terms "Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)", "Newly Independent
States (NIS)", and "Former Soviet Union (FSU)" in a number of places and
contexts (here, news, television, news magazines, etc.)
Which is/are "correct"?
Are they interchangeable, or do they convey slightly different meanings?
Is/are any of the correct ones "preferred" or "offensive" or ... ?
