WHAT'S COMING . . .
Friends, instead of our usual section describing new postings and newly
discovered information resources, we thought we would list today some
efforts underway which we thought would interest you. We will try to
provide this "What's Coming . . ." section as a weekly update (perhaps
sent each Monday morning) to keep you up-to-date with current plans.
* We are most excited about the very real prospect that we will soon be
able to provide a complete 'mirror' of the F&P WWW server and the
FRIENDS listserv in Pushchino, Russia. We are working with a
generous organization who will hopefully be providing the needed
equipment.
This is significant for a number of reasons -- but, primarily, because it
will enable a much greater degree of access for our friends in Russia and
other nations of the FSU. The speed and cost of the international
connections makes the service too expensive and too slow for effective use.
We hope to have good news to share with you here soon.
* We recently received word from the Citizens Democracy Corps that
we will be able to publish their excellent NIS email directory
on-line. We are hoping to work with the CDC and IREX organizations on
publication of a searchable on-line "annotated white pages"
directory of people and organizations in and involved with the
countries of the former soviet union. We see this as one of
the most critical information needs we can address.
* As mentioned last week, we will soon begin publishing an entire
set of materials from the INFOMAG organization. This will include
the tables of contents and abstracts from several Russian scholarly
journals.
* We are in process of re-designing our 'home page', creating a new
map (which, among other things, will include the US State of Alaska!),
and providing new 'buttons' to point to a reorganized view of the
Friends and Partners WWW server.
We are hoping to work with one of our subscribers on a better visual
design and organization of the server and with two artist friends who
have offered to help us with the graphics.
We welcome your comments and suggestions about how to best
organize the server so that users can most easily find information.
* Related to the previous item, we are just beginning work on a draft
planning document which we hope to share with our subscribers during the
early part of next week. In this document, we want to propose goals for
the future direction of this service and then invite comments and
suggestions. Prior to our publishing this first draft, however, we would
very much like to hear your comments, suggestions, and criticisms.
* Before the end of this week, we will be sending to our subscribers an
e-mail 'form' on which folks will be invited to provide basic name and
address information and any additional information about interests and
areas of expertise which might be of interest to users and visitors to this
service. Our goal is to create a 'white pages' of our F&P subscribers
which will be browsable and searchable by anyone visiting the WWW server
(or, users of the email gateway to the WWW server). We now have over 560
subscribers -- representing many countries and all sorts of interests and
capabilities. We feel we need to have a searchable information base on
this very important resource.
We are *very* open to suggestion to the type of information
we should place on this e-mail form (which will also be placed on
the WWW server so that folks using Xmosaic and Lynx can complete
and submit their form on-line).
* Some 'small' projects on which we are continuing to work:
^ a PC version of the F&P WWW server. We regret how long it
has taken on this long-ago-promised item. It has been a
bit more difficult than anticipated because of the filename
length restrictions imposed by the DOS operating system. We
hope to have this finished by April 1.
^ a more organized, structured "More Information Resources" page
pointing to additional FSU/Eastern/Central-Europe information
servers and to other important WWW resources.
^ a new FTP archive (reachable via the WWW server) in which we will
include software needed for use of the F&P service AND a complete
archive of fonts and software utilities for working with Cyrillic text.
^ Lots of technical tools to help us do a better, more timely job
of maintaining the information content of the server.

I think that this list as well as the friends gopher are an excellent
source of information. Thanks.
Also, does anyone know of any college level courses that can be taken online
without going through the commercial services? I was especially looking
for those related to business.

Dear Friends,
I recently received this address when I made the following post on
Kidsphere:
Dear Kidsphere participants,
.I would like to request help in determining the availability of internet
.access in Vladivostok, Russia. My hometown of Juneau, Alaska is
.involved in a number of cultural, economic, and educational (teacher and
. student) exchanges since Vladivostok and Juneau determined to be
.sister cities.
_________________________^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^__________________________
I went to explain that I have two teacher friends over there right
now and we've found it very difficult to communciate. Mail has taken
a month, phone access has been difficult, and the faxing we have done
is awfully expensive.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: int law in Russia
Greetings!
I am wondering whether any subscribers to this list know the names of western
scholars studying the development of international law within Russia (or other
former Soviet states) -- I am particularly interested in Russian concepts of
sovereignty, succession, secession, and minority rights: whether and to
what extent Russian legal scholars are taking part in a broader
(international) discussion on this topics as they relate to the former
Soviet Union.
Thank you

Dear Friends:
I am pleased to announce the release of Squeeze This!, the new CD by Those
Darn Accordions. The CD includes the chilling Grodno in the
Moonlight..the story of the band's train trip from Warsaw to Vilnius.
Anyone who has ever made this train trip will certainly identify with this
song. Also included is the haunting Autumn in Vilnius, an instrumental.
Hopefully Greg will make portions of these songs available for you to hear
on your computer.
Other songs on the CD include The Story of Lawrence Welk, We're An
Accordion band, Fire, Pump it Up, The Bowling King, Sing, Sing, Sing and
more. 14 songs in all.
If you have any questions about the CD or Those Darn Accordions, please
drop me a line.
And remember, whether you're in Minsk, Moscow or Milwaukee, if you find
people having a good time, you'll find an accordion.

Subject: aCCESS Accessing Internet from Moscow
Dear Natasha,
I have enjoyed receiving your FRIENDS postings and believe
that your service has a lot of potential, particularly at
this stage in Russia's relationship with the world. Russia
is learning about participation in the world community, just
as we are learning about life in Russia.
I shall be working in Russia in the near future and would
like some information about accessing the Internet from
Moscow. How is it done? Are there any dial-up servers?
Thank you for any information you can provide.

Subject: Friends Center Moscow
Saturday, March 5, 1994
Dear Friends and Partners,
I am very interested in your new network and want to tell you about
the way I will be working in Russia. I invite people to support us with
funds, with ideas for grass roots groups who would like to work with
us, or with volunteer work. Addresses for contacting us are at the end of
this message.
I have been a Quaker for about 13 years, primarily involved with the
Palo Alto and San Francisco Friends Meetings. My primary social
justice involvement has been with the project of the
creation of a Friends Center in Moscow. Since 1987, I have been 10
times to the former USSR, mostly with Quaker groups, but also
working in citizen diplomacy on exchange programs.
Friends Center Moscow:
The Religious Society of Friends has a long history of presence in Russia
dating back to Peter the Great. For many years, Quakers could do little
as the Communist government severely limited foreign visitors. Now
that the cold war is over, it is time to renew our long-term commitment
to friendship with the peoples. of Russia and Ukraine.
Pacific Yearly Meeting East-West Relations Committee (EWRC) has
been working since 1983 to focus attention on building connections
with people in the former Soviet Union through workshops, tours and
exchanges. EWRC now proposes a Friends Center in Moscow to
provide the long term stable program and location needed to support
both spiritual outreach and social justice goals.
A key aspect of the CenterUs program is to support grassroots efforts
beginning in Russia which share the traditional concerns of Quaker
social justice efforts: human rights, equality, peace, nonviolent conflict
resolution, developing democratic institutions, and environmental,
educational, health and social service issues. Russians beginning these
organizations are requesting the assistance of Quaker activists willing to
volunteer their time to assist these organizations learn the skills of
grass roots advocacy and becoming linked to similar organizations
locally and globally.
Many western Friends welcome the opportunity to assist Russians in
the building of their new social and political system. These Quakers
have considerable experience in *letting their lives speak* through
their activism in grass roots organizing in the US and many other
countries. The Center would act as a broker. Quaker teachers,
psychologists, nurses and community organizers in America are already
expressing enthusiasm.
The Center, staffed by Americans and Russians, and using volunteer
help, would provide:
Workshops on building nonviolent social movements, and grass roots
community organizing,
A neutral place for discussions between the different groups in ethnic
conflicts, for instance, to talk with each other in a safe environment.
Classes in the unique ways of Quakers: pacifism, simple living,
decisions by unity, clearness processes, and the Friends.
Resource center and library for information on Quaker spirituality and
social justice.
Support of Americans, Russians and others participating in Quaker
service projects.
Supportive environment for the development of friendships and joint
ventures between like minded Russians and foreigners.
A meeting place for people worshiping after the manner of Friends.
The program of the Center will also occur in other cities and in the
homes and offices of grass roots groups. Some examples of actual grass
roots groups which could use this program have been identified:
A group of psychologists have developed neighborhood mediation
skills and need more support to organize their program.
Families of severely handicapped children who are at home without
services from the state. A self-help group started a few years ago in one
neighborhood of north Moscow. All kinds of services are needed--how
to organize treatment programs, how to advocate for the needs, how to
get the material aids needed.
The Russian system is that an orphan is in a creche from birth to three,
and then moved to an orphanage in another part of Russia. A group of
women in a town want to organize a program so that some of the
children in the town creche can remain in the community.
Women are starting an organization of families of young men who
want to be conscientious objectors, some of whom are currently in
prison.
A group of Russian immigrants from Kazakstan is resettling in Russia
and needs to organize themselves to obtain the services they need.
A group American and Russian women in Moscow are joining together
to begin a rape crisis center and a battered women*s shelter. They will
need the support of Western activists in this field.
An international interim governing board was established to expand
the role of the current Friend Center Moscow idea to include spiritual
outreach and communications. A primarily Russian advisory board on
site in Moscow will be set up. An independent non-profit will be
established to fund and manage the Center. It is hoped that within a
few years the staffing and governance can be primarily Russian.
I will be going to Russia April first to begin to look for the site for the
Center and to begin the program in advance of the official organization
of the Center, in coordination with British Friends.
How can you participate?
Do you know grass roots groups in Russia and Ukraine who would be
interested in participating with us? We would love to know about
them and discuss their needs.
Consider becoming a volunteer in Russia. (No, you do not need to
speak Russian.) If you will be in Russia for some other reason over the
next two years, please coordinate with us and consider taking some
extra time to participate in our program. If you would like to come to
Russia to help, we will work with you about all aspects of the trip.
