WHAT'S NEW . . .
* Dave Caulkins has provided us with information on Glasnet.
GlasNet is the first non-profit, non-governmental
telecommunications network to be established in the Former Soviet
Union. It is a network in the Former Soviet Union for people
there who have access to electronic communication equipment;
typically a PC and a modem. Anyone with access to the Internet or many
other networks can exchange Email with GlasNet users. This
is available from a new "Information" page available from the "Life"
section.
* Jeff Davis from Wyoming has very generously transcribed and provided
the recent speech by Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder
John Barlow to a USENIX conference. This is an interesting and
important speech about information infrastructure. Our thanks to
Jeff for his generosity in providing this to us. This
is available from the new "Information" page available from the "Life"
section.
* Another important article on information infrastructure entitled
"Civic Promise of the National Information Infrastructure" is
also provided from the new "Information" page. Our thanks to
T. Blake with the U.S. House of Representatives for forwarding
this to our attention.
* Zoli Fekete has offered us his excellent Hungarian electronic resources
FAQ document. This is available from the "More Information Resources"
page.
* We have established a new page from the "Science" page devoted to
information sharing on Agricultural issues. An important element of
this new service is the weekly RUSAG listserv digests which summarize
agricultural news of interest on a weekly basis. Our thanks to
Betty P. Brown for making this possible.
* United Nations Position Vacancies are provided here by Thomas F.
Burola & Associates, International Management Consultants to the
United Nations. This is available from the Funding and Exchange
page. Thanks to Thomas Burola for providing this information.
* An announcement for the WOMEN, POLITICS, ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION conference
is posted from the funding and exchange page.
* A cyrillic font for the Macintosh is now available from our
anonymous ftp server. Just ftp to solar.rtd.utk.edu and change
directory to /friends/mac to obtain the cyrillic file.

By all means post the GlasNet info on Friends and Partners.
I'm sure we do have a common area of interest. Let me think about
what would be good for both of us. When I've come up with
something more concrete, I'll let you know.

Thanks so much for your interest in Rusag-L. We would love
to have you cross-post information from Rusag with the
understanding that you will cite full credit to the Rusag-L list
and the various other sources of information. In exchange, would
you permit Rusag to cite stats and interesting pieces for "did
you know" entries, which is a part of our Rusag provisions? In
addition, I would like to subscribe to your "Friends and
Partners" list.
Thanks again,
Betty P. Brown

The International Computer Music Association 1991 Membership
book lists an organization in the "USSR" called the Computer
Music and Musical Informatics Association- but not listed in
1992/3. How do we find out about them/it. In a few years a
conference in Russia might be something to consider. We are
book about 4 years in advance but early groundlaying is an advantage.

Dear Mr. Cole:
I have recently been told about your efforts at American Russian Academic
Exchange by John Sloan. I would be immensely grateful if you could aid me
in any way. I am currently a second year graduate student in philosophy at
Villanova University. Before continuing on with my PhD. work, I would like
to spend a year in Russia. My hope is that I will be able to find a position
teaching English (or doing whatever else might allow me to stay for an
extended period while I work on acquiring the language). If you have any
ideas or suggestions for me, as mentioned, I would be grateful to hear them.
Also, I would like to know how I can subscribe to the bulliten board I have
been told you are associated with.
Best regards,
Brian Payne

FRIENDS and PARTNERS
Dear collegues:
I am one of the new users of FRIENDS and PARTNERS server and has
an special interest to your very important and useful activity.
Some months ago I began distribution via E-mail tables of
contents (TOC) of some scientific yournals. Now I am a head of
special INFOMAG Service Group, which is non-profit group,
supported by Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and
working in the frame of RELARN association. For full information
about INFOMAG activity send, please, command
HELP
on our addresses infomag@glas.apc.org or
infomag@lgrant.mipt.msk.su
Now the numbers of our users and distributed by INFOMAG TOC`s
increase very rapidly. We distribute now the TOC`s of most
"first order" russian physical journals, like JETP, UFN etc.
Except of journal TOC`s, our users can receive from INFOMAG some
scientific electronic bulletines, for example "Physics NEWS
UPDATe" and "WHAT`s NEW", issued by American Physical Society.
Most of users of INFOMAG system are russian scientists,
libraries and institutes, but also there are many "english
spoken" peoples from foreign countries , who has interest to
russian TOC`s, and, especially, to TOC of english version of our
magazines, issued by russian editorial boards. For example, the
TOC of english version of PHYSICS-USPEKHI journal is very
popular. The access to INFOMAG materials is possible via
E-mail from addresses, listed above, and, also, all our
materials are posted in conference glas.infomag, which is
supported by GLASNET network. Many our materials, sending to
western countries, are distributed via GLASNET.
I think, that it will be very useful organize special directory
in FRIENDS and PARTNERS server, for systematically posting of
INFOMAG MATERIALS. Of course, as a first step, I think about
posting in FRIENDS and PARTNERS TOC`s of english version of our
magazines. But, there are many russian people, who will be
satisfied very much by possibility to read TOC`s of russian
magazines, especially taking into account, that we distribute
TOC`s before issuing of paper version. This gap in most of cases
is about 1-3 months.
I don`t know, what situation is with "russian spoken" FRIENDS
and PARTNERS server here, in Russia. But this server, of course,
should be filled , at first order, by TOC`s of foreign
magazines, distributed now via electronic networks. Also, many
electronic bulletines and newspaper can find their place here
also. I will be very glad to discuss all these problems with
you, and I am ready to spend my time and efforts for this
cooperation of INFOMAG with your project. May be meeting with
Natasha can be the first step of this discussion.
I will be very thankfull for your opinion about problems,
discussed above.
Sincerely
Victor G. Veselago
Head of INFOMAG Service Group

Subject: Hello!
My name is Tom Bruce and I have just joined the "Friends" listserver.
However, it doesn't seem to be passing messages back-and-forth so I
have deceided to make direct contact.
---
My interest is in finding a person who has been using computers in
Forest, Wildlife or Ecosystem management. I am a computer specialist
and have been doing this for the US Forest Service for a number of
years. Perhaps we can exchange some idea on what we are doing and how
we do it. I am more interested in "production" than in "research."
However, if the discussion is mainly on the use of computers in the
above areas then I'm open to what ever takes place.
---
Since I'm new to internet I'll just wait to see if a contact has been
made. - thanks you - tom
ps I'm also a former Peace Corp Volunteer (India) and would like to
know if there are any working Peace Corp People in your area.
