Daily Digest for 94-02-18

Dear friends,

This week we reached a couple of 'milestones' with the "Friends and
Partners" service -- we had our 1 month 'birthday' on Wednesday and, on
=46riday (today), passed the '500 mark' on the FRIENDS listserver (we
currently have 502 subscribers).

We are pleased with the continuing interest and are very hopeful for
continued growth in terms of new information resources and new 'friends and
partners. We will be focusing more attention on new information resource
development during the next few weeks.

Thanks for your continued interest, support, and feedback!

WHAT'S NEW . . .

Thanks to the excellent work of Angie Croft and Ellee Margileth of
UT Research Services, we now have nicely formatted versions of
Alan Boyle's excellent GlasNews newsletter. GlasNews is a quarterly
publication on East-West contacts in communications - including journalism,
telecommunications, advertising and public relations. It's published
by the Art Pattison Communications Exchange Program, based in Seattle.

This is available from the "News" page. There are some really

Subject: Russian university newspaper "Za Nauku"

Dear Greg,

Thank you for establishing and keeping up the Friends and Partners
WWW server! I have some information resource which can be useful
for you.

Around 10 years ago I was a member of the editorial board of
"Za Nauku", university newspaper of Moscow Institute of Physics
and Technology. Nowdays they wish to distribute this newspaper
electronically free of charge, reaching PhysTech alumni around
the world. They are doing it through INFOMAG information service
(infomag@glas.apc.org), but due to the traffic limitations they cannot
establish a mailing list there. So they are relaying this newspaper to
some people (including me) to distribute it worldwide.

So I'd appreciate you getting those issues and
making them available on your WWW server.

Thanks in advance and thanks again for your work

Subject: Russian fonts for AIX & PS, find a friend

Dear F&P:

1. Please let me know how and where from I can "ftp" Russian fonts and
drivers for screen & keyboard for IBM RS/6000 (AIX) and some PostScript
fonts for laser printers. I have some Russian HP laser fonts but
no utilities to convert them into PS-standard and/or download to
printer.

2. I want to find e-mail address of my old friend Oleg Mornev
of Institute of Biophysics, Puschino, Serpukhov region.
His old node: venus.ibioc.serpukhov.su doesn't respond.

I think F&P has the unique opportunity to restore old links
and to establish new contacts.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Programmer wants internship in U.S.

Hello Greg and Natasha,

I am writing on behalf of a friend who has e-mail access, but
not full Intenet access yet.

He is a programmer for a large firm in Irkutsk --- a systems analyst there
more than anything. He has a lot of experience writing in C++, and setting
up LANs and writing programs for this, etc.. I have his resume, but not with
me at the moment and so I'm not able to write in detail about is qualificati=
ons
here and now.

He has asked me many times if I know of any internship in the U.S. he could =
do.
His company would pay for his plane fare, if he could be paid a living wage =
in
the U.S. to work for just awhile. He speaks English pretty well, and is a qu=
ite
a decent, hard-working guy.

If anyone knows of any opportunities for Gennady Antropov to work as a
programmer for a time here in the U.S., please write to him at:

Sender: George Chachis (PL0118@psilink.com)
Subject: Metallurgical Engineer

(cross-posted from INFO-RUSS)

A friend of mine is part of a small venture group that is trying to
start several ventures in Russia.

He is looking for a casting (metallurgical) engineer. He has not given
me the Russian translation for the title yet.

Advantages: 1) Age does not matter.

              2) The person MUST have worked as a casting engineer
in the Soviet Union. He does not have to be employed
in that field in the U.S. or Canada. It does not
matter what he is doing now -- unemployed or underemployed=
..

Disadvantages: 1) This is for a test, short-term contract. There is no
long-run security or financial stability. Raw capitalism.

               2) The candidate will have to live in Russia or Belarus for
several months at a time. This may involve living in
the foundry cities in the Urals.

My friend leaves on a business trip soon so please reply as soon as you
can.

PLEASE RESPOND DIRECTLY TO MY MAILING ADDRESS BELOW. DO NOT REPLY TO
THE LIST.

Thanks,

George Chachis
