)From: "Andy V. Tsvetkov" (andy@ts.sebastopol.ua)
Hi P&F !!
I'm a scintific employeer at Marine Hidrophysical Institute
(Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), Remote Sensing Department. I
think F&P board can help me to find people I could discuss my
interests and, perhaps, I could be answering all your questions. After
preface, I will briefly describe my interests.
Professional:
I'm ineresting in diurnal heating of seas and ocean and
investigation of this fenomena from a board of ships and from
satellites.
May be somebody now oceanography archives in USA or Europe
where I can find the satellite information from NOAA stellites
under Atlantic ocean. The idea is in verification of diurnal
heating model I've prepeared and the measurement we made from
research vessels at 1988-89 at Atlantic ocean and at Black and
Mideterranian seas. This measurements was about diurnal heating.
May be somebody can recommend me some scientist to collaborate
with. He must have ability to access to archives of this
information, and which are interesting for this fenomena or
adjacent?
Is there anybody now about how I can find information about
foreseeing conferencies and meeting abot oceanography and remote
sensing?
Is there anybody who want to communicate with me about this?
Hobby:
I'm a car fan and prefer do-it-yourself repair of it.
Most interesting for me is the information about construction
details of this car. And problems can met everybody when using and
repairing Ford cars.
Would you can say me about addresses of Ford Escourt fans
Clubs and addresses of firms I can ask about prices of spare parts
for this cars and can buy them by mail. May be you have information
about possibilities of parts interchanging between different
vehicles? I have only simple manual about this car and its contents
is very different from manuals contents about russian vechicles.
About my vehicle which was made in USA:
FORD ESCORT QUIRK L, 1981 year prod., hatchback, front wheel drive,
3 doors, Carburetor, Manual transaxle (4 speeds), Gasoline, Less
Air Conditioning Engine- 4 Cylinders, 1.6 Liters, Gasoline.
About another interests in a future...
Hope to have a lot of fine penpals..!
Best whishes for P&F!

Subject: Looking to Communicate
Hello,
I am enjoying the F&P service very much. Thanks for
the Great job!
I am interested in communicating with someone of
similar interest in Russia, or the former Soviet
Republics. A brief biography follows:
I am a 46 year-old software engineer, employed by
Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. in Greensboro, North
Carolina. I am married and have two children: one
a daughter who is senior in high school, the other a
son who is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan.
My hobbies include fishing (I hear there is great
fishing in Russia), war gaming, and cooking (especially
Chinese cuisine).
I am interested in software development and CAD on a
professional level, and all aspects of Russian life
on a personal level. However, I know very little about
Russia and do not speak the language.
I would like very much to talk to some folks out on
the net, but must limit myself to English speakers only.
If you are interested in corresponding, I can be
reached at d-maston@volvo.com
I look forward to hearing from someone.

Subject: 3DPACTBYUTE!
Well, I am planning on attending MGU this summer on an internship from
the Montana department of Fish and Wildlife. Lots of lectures on ecology
and environmental management, plus a polarexpedition to the Kolski
peninsula-along with various other trips to Proiski-Terrace national park
and Losiny Ostrov. I would like to hear from folks who can describe
these regions and their ecological outlook. I speak pretty good Russian,
though I have limited computer skills. DO CKOPOGA!

Subject: Singer wanted
Those Darn Accordions, America's favorite nearly all-accordion big band,
are seeking one good LEAD female vocalist to join the band.
This woman must be a dynamic singer, possess excellent stage presence,
have a sense of humor, like to dress in colorful, whacky outfits and must be
willing to work with other female singers in the band. Must be able to
travel.
The ability to play the accordion is not a prerequisite, but is a
definite plus.
If you or someone you know someone who has these qualifications, please have
her get in touch with me.
Those Darn Accordions! are based in San Francisco. Those Darn Accordions
play music from a wide variety of ethnic genres and musical styles
including Eastern european, Tex-Mex, Swing, Rock, Pop, Ska, and Polka.
Thank you.

WHAT'S NEW . . .
We now have a copy of the Friends and Partners server available for the
Macintosh. This is of potential interest to folks who would like to
browse, on their own local Macintosh computer, the F&P material using the
free Mosaic software.
It is on our anonymous ftp server.
Directions:
FTP to solar.rtd.utk.edu, enter ftp at the username prompt (make sure and
enter in all lowercase) and, then, at the password prompt, enter your email
address. You will be logged into our ftp server.
Then, do a cd /friends/mac and then do a dir and you will see the several
files that you will need. One of them, called 'friends.sea.hqx' is an
archive of the server itself.
By downloading this file (with the 'get' command) and all of the software
files (also in the 'helper' directory) to your Mac and unarchiving them,
you will have all of the software and all of the information, graphics, and
audio that is currently available on our Friends and Partners server.
Please let us know if you have any problems or questions in transferring
this information.
After you have installed all on your Macintosh, you can launch Mac Mosaic.
Don't worry if it gives you an error message about 'no network connection'
or some such. After acknowledging an error message, choose "Open Local"
from the File menu, and find the document 'home.html' in the 'friends'
directory. From this point forward, the server will behave pretty much as
it would if you were using mosaic on the Internet. Exceptions: you cannot
use the feature which allows you to click on graphic maps; if you click on
any item that is *not* on the local F&P server, the access will fail. If
you have installed JPEGView and ULaw, you will be able to view graphics
(such as the maps in the Geography section) and you will be able to listen
to audio files (such as the one currently in the Music section).
These directions are admittedly sketchy for folks who are not familiar with
anonymous FTP access. Send us questions and we will try to help you with
your particular envirnment.
Some people may want access to this who do not have any access to the
Internet. If you will send an email message to us, we will try to mail you
a copy of the current server material.
If there is interest in continuing this 'experiment' we will develop an
update service by which people can 'pick up' weekly updates of the F&P server.
The big question is when can we have this available for the PC version of
Windows Mosaic. Hopefully, this will be available by the end of upcoming
weekend. It has proven a bit more difficult than we had planned because of
the 8 character filename limitation (which we did not adhere to in the unix
version of the server). We're going to have to develop some programs to
convert longer names to something that DOS can handle (and convert the
internal hypertext links to conform to the shorter filenames). As soon as
that is ready, we should have a PC version of the server (and software)
ready to go.
