TECH TALK: Experiment with new version of the Lynx
                   software

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

What's New . . .

* A new paper entitled "Labour Market and Employment in Russia:
Beginning of Changes" by Vladimir Gimpelson is available on the
'business and economics' page and is re-published with permission
   of NATO.

* Andrei Arkhipov has established the first WWW server in Russia.
This is one of the first bi-lingual servers on the network (offering
material in both English and Russian) and *definitely* worth a visit.
You can visit from the "More Information" page of F&P or
with the direct URL of http://www.elvis.msk.su.

* Information on another interesting new information resource, the "East-West
Information Server" is also available from the "More Information"
page. This provides email access for scientists and professionals
outside the FSU to information about scientific and technical
activities in the FSU and Eastern Europe.

Hello,

I think F&P is a terrific idea, and am happy to see it develop. A few
miscellaneous items:

(1) Having the Olympics data online is a nice idea; are you planning anything
for the Goodwill Games in July?

(2) I'll be in Russia (Kostenki, near Voronezh) for an archaeological dig in
July, and hope to also spend a few days in Moscow and/or St. Petersburg. Any
suggestions on "things not to be missed" would be appreciated. I certainly
plan that this won't be my last trip to Russia!

(3) I have a friend who's trying to find ways to communicate between the US and
colleagues in Russia. For efficiency, this would be electronic where possible,
so I'm interested in computer network access (Internet, CompuServe, BitNet,
whatever).

(4) I've found the book "Russka" to be very interesting and informative. I'd
recommend it to anyone out there, but I'd also be very interested in reactions
from anyone of Russian origin or with personal knowledge of the accuracy of the
history presented. It's a historical novel, but purports to be accurate in
broad historical perspective.

Good luck with F&P in future!

Doug

Hi FRIENDS&PARTNERS:

Does anyone have any information on X28 Telecommunication Protocol? I need
it for my friend in Moscow. I'd appreciate a prompt answer.

Thanks,

Tatiana

Tech Talk . . .

Today's posting will be brief.

We are experimenting with a new version of the Lynx software (a 'character
mode' WWW browser -- which you are using if you are using the 'friends'
account on our computer).

The version of this software we are currently using has a few bugs which
are being fixed in a new release which should be available 'any day now.'

But, in the meantime, we are testing a 'beta' version of the new release
which corrects some of the current bugs and which offers some other
advantages. If you would like to try this out, just do the following:

telnet solar.rtd.utk.edu

at the login: prompt, enter 'friends2' (in all lowercase letters and
without the quotes). You must be using a vt100 terminal emulation to use
this method of access.

The interface is essentially the same but you will note some changes -- and
hopefully some advantages over the version of Lynx which we use with the
'friends' account.

Your comments and suggestions on this new software will be much appreciated!

NOTE: If there are any technical issues you would like to see addressed in
'tech talk', please let us know. We'll be glad to cover any and all of
your F&P or broader Internet questions.
