WHAT'S NEW . . .

* Due to popular request, the "daily digests" of the F&P listserv are now
being archived on the F&P WWW server. These are available from the
home page and from the listserver page. These documents have been
indexed using the popular WAIS software so that you can perform
  full-text keyword searches on them.

* We have just established an experimental WAIS server over a collection
of the RFE/RL News items. Choosing this item will permit you to
conduct full-text searches of our current collection of RFE/RL
bulletins. Instructions on how to conduct searches has also been
provided. Pending your reaction to this and the encouragement of the
RFE/RL information providers, this will hopefully become a permanent part of
the F&P service. Many thanks to John Gerber for the perl scripts
which make possible this new searching service. If we are permitted to
make this a permanent service, this should make the RFE/RL material useful
  as a good research/reference resource.

* The home page has been reorganized so that you no longer have to read the
long letter before finding all of the various menu options.

* Art Talk / Art Action is now available from the Art and Music page. This
is a new forum started by Cynthia DuVal of the University of California,
Santa Cruz to facilitate interdisciplinary and multi-cultural network
mediated collaborations on the FRIENDS server. This is a brand new forum
and your input and help is welcome!

* The schedule for and results from The 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer
are now made available from the "Life" page. This service is set up for
free Internet access in a joint effort by Sun Microsystems,
Skrivervik Data, NTB (a Norwegian news wire service) and Oslonett, Inc.

* The Frontiers of Perception Institute is a Seattle, Washington based
organization which is sharing some interesting information with us about
their work in helping modern society "deal effectively with the rate and
scale of change that increasingly structures our daily lives". This new
material is available from the "Life" page.

* A description of Sabre Foundation, Inc's Scientific Assistance Project is
available from the "Education" page and from the "Funding Opportunities"
area. This project specializes in providing college and professional-level
educational materials to institutions and individuals in Eastern Europe and
the countries of the former Soviet Union. Since 1986, it has donated more
than 1.5 million books and journals through its on-going programs. Thanks
to Asad Salameh for providing this information.

Hello,
I am Dale Comstock, Professor of Mathematics at Central
Washington University. I have been to Russia 4 times in the
last 5 years, speak Russian poorly, have just completed a
faculty exchange appointment at Hertzen State Pedagogical
University in St. Petersburg and know quite a bit about the
preparation of mathematics teachers in Russia.

)From what I have seen so far I like what the list is trying
to do and wish it 'vsevo dobrovo'.

In response to Pat Leathrums request for info on embassies
and consulates, here is some data that might be helpful:

Russian Consulate - San Fran: 415/202-9800 or 928-6878
                                FAX:415/929-0306
Russian Consulate - Seattle: 206/728-1910
                                FAX:206-728-1871
American Consulate - St. P: 812/274-82-35 or 274-85-68
 Loc. on Furshtadtskaya St.
 Metro Sta. Chernoyshevskaya

Look forward to participating in the list from time to time
and would like to e-mail with others in Russia, especially.
I currently have an American friend doing an exchange in
Krasnodarsk. Hope to e-mail with you soon.

Subject: Accordion music

Hi - someone has asked me to help them get hold of a file
you mentioned in a message that they received. The
reference was to a sound file of a Lithuanian song
played on the accordion. You referred to your server -
could you send me the URL for that server? Or other
info on getting the file.

Thanks so much for your help.

Polly

Subject: Contact with Russian Law Enforcement Officers/Educators

Dear Friends,
My first message since I've been reading the daily messages for a
week now. Like all of you I am really excited about the opportunity
to communicate with our Russian friends.
I am the Chairperson of a criminal justice program at our community
college. I have been a law enforcement officer for 27 years in many
different capacities. In November I visited Moscow as a guest of the
Minister of the Interior to attend the first annual conference on
criminal justice. A wonderful experience to say the least.
I am most interested in any help that I can get in establishing
E-mail contact with any Russian law enforcement official or educator.
The exchange of information during my stay in Moscow and St. Petersburg
only served to enhance my desire to learn more and help my counterparts
with the difficult task ahead of them. They are well behind us in the
practice of law enforcement in a democracy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to all,
Terry L. White

Hello Natasha,

Thank you for your effort and willingness to extend your culture and great
country to us here in USA. I am a high school Earth Science teacher
(geology). My wife and I have travelled considerably but not to your
land. Maybe some day that will be possible. If there is a teacher of
similar interests, I would enjoy exchanging messages and possibly even
specimens of minerals, rocks or fossils. (We are in the Ozarks Plateau
which is a Karst area.) Keep up your excellent work. Thank you again and
my special regards to your family.
