Daily Digest for 93-02-04
The following are additions / changes made to the server since
February 3, 1994.
* We now have a new listserv-based gateway to the WWW material on
"Friends and Partners". Those who have subscribed to the FRIENDS
listserv can now send a message to listproc@solar.rtd.utk.edu
with the following format:
run friends none http solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/home.html
In return, you will receive via email the requested document. The only
portion of this command line that you will want to modify is the
"solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/home.html" portion. Any documents you wish to
retrieve from the F&P server should be prefaced with
"solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/". Thus, if you see a reference to a file
called "stats/940131.html", give the command:
run friends none http solar.rtd.utk.edu/friends/stats/940131.html
in order to retrieve the file.
We will be making several enhancements to this over the next few days --
adding a 'filter' which will remove most of the hypertext markup
commands and adding new capabilities for interacting with
gopher, WAIS, and ftp servers.
This capability is, of course, for those without direct network
access to the Internet.
We will also be posting some further instructions for helping you
use this (these directions are admittedly sketchy at best!).
Please let us know of any questions / comments / suggestions.
* We have our first audio file available for 'listening' from the
server. Tom Torriglia of the band "Those Darn Accordions" has
graciously shared with us a recording from his latest cassette
"Vongole Fisarmonica!" which he performed at the 4th International
Accordion Festival in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1993. The name of
this lighthearted song is "Lithuania". To download and listen
you will need to be using Mosaic and have the proper sound player
software installed on your machine. (you will also need a lot
of disk space -- the current file is 2.1M - we are hoping to
discover how to compress this file to something a little more
reasonable (any suggestions?)).
Our thanks to Tom for his willingness to share this music with
us! Please free to contact him at tommy@crl.com.

Subject: Art Talk/Art Action
Greetings Friends and Partners readers,
I am an educational researcher interested in developing interdisciplinary and
multi-cultural network mediated collaborations with aesthetic intent. My hope
is that interested artists, scientists and entrepreneurs will find the
Art Talk/Art Action discussion a site for establishing and producing joint
projects. I can imagine Art Talk/Art Action developint into a conference that
reflects the interests of the discussion participants. Discussions between
artists and computer scientists will result in the development of the tools
that we will all need to be able to communicate our diverse ways of thinking
and being in the world over the Internet. The opportunity of bringing mature
artists and scientists into contact with students in a "peripheral
participation" relationship is intriguing and is one area of the communication
system that I will be working to develop. I would like to hear from others of
you who would like to contribute to the development and use of Art Talk/ Art
Action. Please spread the word to others whom you know to be interested in
investigating the use of network communications for multi-cultural and
interdisciplinary Art Talk and Art Action.
With regards,
Cynthia DuVal

)From my travels through Eastern Europe (to perform at the Accordion
Festival in Vilnius) I found accordion players everywhere. Most of the
performers at the Acc. Festival were from Russia and of course, the Baltics.
If there are any accordion players wishing to share musical tastes,
innovations, advances, concert appearances or whatever, with other
accordion players, I submit the following address:

Hope to hear from you.

Beth Clay responded to the request yesterday for funding to
help someone from the University of Zagreb participate in
the IRMA-7 conference:
I noticed a request for funding from someone at the University of Zagreb
to participate in IRMA-7. I asked a Program Officer at the Fogarty
International Center, NIH . . . about funding sources. His best
suggestion was for this person to contact the organizers of the
conferences. They often have funds, or have participants who have funds to
bring people to conferences. . . .

Greg, I thing you and Natasha have hit on a wonderful idea. I would like to
endorse the suggestion already made that you include some simple tutorials
on navigating this complex communications system. I am using Mosaic which
is very helpful for an amateur like myself, but I am still somewhat in awe
of the whole process. I am the Director of the University Health Service at
the U. of Michigan and am interested in making contact with colleagues in
Russia.
