Daily Digest for 94-02-03
The following are additions / changes made to the server since
February 2, 1994.
* The GlasNews publication is now available. GlasNews is a quarterly publication
on East-West contacts in communications - including journalism,
telecommunications, advertising and public relations. It's published
by the Art Pattison Communications Exchange Program, based in Seattle.
The latest issue (Winter, 93-94) is now available from
the News page. We are in process of posting previous issues and
should have these on the server within the next 2 days. Thanks to
Alan Boyle of the Art Pattison Communications Exchange Program for
making this very interesting and useful publication available to us.
* By tomorrow, we hope to announce the availability of a
new listserv-based gateway to WWW, Gopher, FTP, and WAIS-based resources.
When complete (hopefully tomorrow), users with email-only access to
the Internet will be able to use this gateway to retrieve information
from servers all over the world. Thanks to John Gerber, UT computer
science graduate student, for making this possible.

Subject: Friends
I read today a message regarding Russian parents interested in
corresponding with American parents, whose children are corresponding
already. This gave me the thought, that this might be a valuable
forum for, as an example, parents of children with disabilities.
I am the parent of a son with Down Syndrome, aged 2 years, and I
would be very interested in what resources there are in Russia to
provide early intervention for these children, to include them
in the educational system, to meet their special physical needs,
etc. Great strides have been made in the US in these regards, but
there is much to do. Even within the last 20 years attitudes of
health professionals and the society at large have undergone sig-
nificant change.
So the US has many resources at our disposal and laws to protect
the rights of the disabled. What is the status of children with
Down Syndrome in the USSR. Would an opportunity to share our
experiences, our knowledge, etc. be mutually beneficial? It may
be a good means of tapping into information not readily available or
prevent the "reinvention of the wheel."
Very sincerely,
Dick Norwood

Subject: GIS bibliography from Moscow
Hello. This is my first time posting to this group. I am a doctoral
student at the university of florida, specializing in uses of geographic
information systems (GIS) for resource management. I recently sent
email to Dr. V M Tikunov at Moscow University, inquiring about present
use of GIS in Russia. He very generously sent me a bibliography which
I am forwarding to this list, in case there are others who are also
interested in GIS in that part of the world.
Hope this is useful

Subject: A Small Voice In Cyberspace
I'm certainly not a Big Shot. I know a couple of Big Shots. I
call the Governor of the State of Wyoming Mike, because that's his
name. A retired Wyoming rancher I've known for over 20 years
started the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1990. EFF is
responsible for court rulings that extended the US Constitution
into Cyberspace. EFF works for freedom of speech and affordable
access to the internet for all citizens among many other things.
In Russia, a person of my stature with net access is probably
unthinkable. I am a small voice in Cyberspace who lives in
Wyoming.
Global interpersonal communication is a tremendous tool for peace.
My heart and my mind are at your service in these rapidly changing
times. I suppose I would be most useful to Russian social
scientists involved with cultivation of community resources to help
the Russian people. I would be interested in hearing from Russians
involved with alcoholism treatment modalities as well. Bill
Cotter, of Aspen Colorado is also an acquaintance of mine and has
been in Russia for some time now as a consultant in international
business. If some of my new Russian friends are involved with
Bill, please send him my regards and get in touch with me.
I've taken it upon myself to be your liaison at the University of
Wyoming. I've started with a Russian professor here in the hopes
of developing a team effort from the University. Brilliant
scientists can be so Cyber-illiterate sometimes. Take care, and
good luck.

Subject: International exchange of student ideas
I am working with a group of Honors students at Southern Utah
University on a project to connect our students with college and
university students around the world via the INTERNET. They would
like to exchange cultural information and share questions and ideas
concerning world politics, global environment, etc. and any other
topic that might come up.
The focus for the initial project is an honors course to be offered
this spring dealing with three levels or avenues to peace: Inner
peace, community togetherness and global understanding. We hope that
the exchange will go beyond and continue after the class.
We would appreciate any help or insights you might have on creating
these connections. We have quite a few resources that we are
pursuing right now but its a complicated project and we need all the
help we can get.
I received a copy of the "Friends and Partners" announcement which
was cross posted to a listserv I belong to. If you have ideas or
suggestions that scould help us connect with Russian students (or any
of the other states) please share them with us.
If there are any other "connection" projects in the works we would be
more than happy to join and participate or help out if we can. The
specifics of our student exchange is less important than the overall
concept.
. . .
We look forward to hearing from you,
Matthew Nickerson
