Daily Digest for 94-02-02
Other than updated news, weather, and economics pages, there's
nothing new today (lots of stuff in progress but nothing finished . . .)
We received a very good suggestion yesterday from Cynthia Duval of
University of California Santa Cruz regarding some 'training'
information to help folks use the system. In this note, Cynthia mentions
"Do you think that it would be useful to post Tech Talk questions and
answers as part of our daily messages? And, a narrative description of the
system and how it works could be very useful for beginner hackers. . . .
Also, what kind of equipment do people need to be able to view
photographs? Questions like these, a few a day, could be very helpful to a
lot of people (myself included)."
I think this is an excellent idea -- If there are no objections, I will try
to do just as Cynthia suggests and post a few technical 'hints' each day as
a part of this digest to help people utilize the system. Particularly for
those who are using the special 'friends' account to access the F&P
material, the system can be a bit difficult.

I am a Jr. High School teacher of geography and would currently be
interested in communicating with educators in Russia in English format.
The intent is to have groups of students research the areas of location
and contact students through teachers for confirmation of geographical
concepts and understanding. The students here in Michigan would
reciprocate. I also have access to German, Spanish, and French language
translation using computers. Any aid or suggestions on the use of the
network would be appreciated.

Subject: Pen Pal Forum
I'm emailing you from TriState Online, a community based system in
Cincinnati, Ohio. I am just one of 300 sysops that volunteer to provide
information on various topics.
One of my teleboards is called "The Russian House". We provide the
daily news, debates and just recently we started the Pen Pal Forum.
Users/Readers write thier letters online; I compile them and then
send them off to a list of Russian subscribers (children) whom are
fortunate enough to have access by means of thier parents.
TriState Online does not give Telnet access. We have been working on
establishing this forum for nearly two years and just recently got enough
addresses to begin. When we recieve the responses by our Russian friends
they are sent to The Russian House teleboard on our system for the local
users to read.
Yesterday, one of the Russian children's parents asked if they could
join in the forum and possibly talk to other parents. I'm hoping that
with the Friends & Partners here we might be able to get other contacts
in Russia to continue and grow our project here.
Again, I can not telnet out to your server and so this subscriber list
is my only means of communication to you. If I may be able to send our
weekly Pen Pal Forum to an email address that could be posted on one of
your areas, it would be most helpful.
Please let me know if this is possible.
Peace & Love To All,
Rick Olano

This person is looking for funding to attend this meeting. Does
