Sex industry demands refugee status for Iraqi refugees
The Australian Associated Press, December 20, 2000
CANBERRA, Australia (AAP) -- A group representing Australia's sex industry
has written to the federal government to demand refugee status for hundreds
of Iraqi prostitutes being persecuted by the regime of Saddam Hussein.
In a letter to Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock, the Eros Foundation
said prostitutes in Iraq were being systematically murdered.
It also called for Iraq's ambassador to be hauled in for a meeting with
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer so Australia could express its outrage.
Foundation chief executive John Davey said Eros had received reports up to
1,000 prostitutes may have been killed by the Hussein regime, solely on the
grounds of their occupation.
A spokeswoman for Mr Ruddock said refugee applicants were assessed on a
case-by-case basis against internationally-recognised criteria, including
residence outside their home countries.
"The government is not of a mind to create a special visa class," she said.
