Turk police deport 126 women to ex-Soviet states
ANKARA, July 10 (Reuters) - Police in
the Turkish Black Sea port of Trabzon
have deported 126 women after
swooping on prostitutes from the former
Soviet Union, the state-run Anatolian
news agency said on Monday.
Thousands of women from the former
eastern bloc come to Turkey each year
to work in the booming sex trade. Trabzon, close to
Georgia and with frequent flights to Russia and Central
Asia, is a popular destination for the prostitutes
nicknamed "Natashas" by Turkish men.
Police raided hotels and restaurants frequently used by
the
prostitutes and conducted health checks on the women
before deporting them. Police ordered the places to be
closed, the agency said.
