THE AUK WINS THE SDC/CIMERA GRANT COMPETITION ON MEDIA RESEARCH IN
KYRGYZSTAN

The American University in Kyrgyzstan (AUK) won a grant competition for a
research on the situation of the mass media in Kyrgyzstan. The research is
funded by the Swiss Development and Cooperation (SDC), Bishkek office, and
managed by Geneva based organization CIMERA.

Five university and private research institutions from Kyrgyzstan took part
in the competition. An international and independent committee evaluated the
submitted projects, from which the proposal of AUK received the highest
appreciation. The research will be realized by a team composed from the
Journalism Program of the American University in Kyrgyzstan (AUK) and
Sociology Department of Bishkek Humanitarian University (BHU).

The research project, which will be completed in a period of nine months,
will study the current state of the media in Kyrgyzstan, their
infrastructure and functioning problems, and help to understand the
mechanisms limiting the flow of information between the capital city and the
south of the country. The results of the researches will be used to support
activities to strengthen the media in Kyrgyzstan and reduce the discrepancy
in access to information in the regions and the capital.

The results of the research will be available to journalists and media
institutes, with the aim of better appreciating the conditions of the mass
media in Kyrgyzstan, the difficulties the sector is facing, and
possibilities of future trends. The findings of the study will be used in
future media training and development programs.

CIMERA is running an SDC funded media program, the Central Asia Media
Support Project (CAMsP), which organizes regional conferences and training
programs to help alleviate the reporting standards in the region. It is
already planned that the results of the researches will be presented by the
research team in the framework of CAMsP conferences.
