Press Release:
Osh, July 20, 2000.

The Jalal-Abad based journalist Moldosali Ibraimov was released on July 20
from the detention institution after the judge Shermatov Mirzamamat of
Jalal-Abad oblast ( province) made a ruling to free the journalist. Prior
to this court hearing, Moldosali Ibraimov and the newspaper "Akyikat"
appealed the previous verdict of the Jalal-Abad city court to the oblast
court. The Bishkek based lawyer Shamaral Maychiev represented the
journalist and the newspaper at the court hearing.

However, the ruling made by the judge Shermatov on July 20 imposed a 10,000
soms ( $ 230) fine to be paid by Moldosali Ibraimov to the judge Kasymbekov
for the moral damage caused by the libel ( previously the fine was 107,000
($2200) )
The 100,00 fine that the newspaper "Akyikat" was due to pay to Kasymbekov
was annuled.

On June 19, Moldosali Ibraimov was sentenced to two years of imprisonment
after the Jalal-Abad city court judge Suleimanov Jusup found him guilty of
libel. Moldosali Ibraimov was arrested on June 19 shortly after the verdict
was made. The Jalal-Abad newspaper "Akikat," which published his article
titled " Has the judge commited a crime?" was fined 100,000 soms ( $2000).
In this article, the journalist alleged the Suzak based judge Kasymbekov
Toktosun of accepting a bribe from a parliament candidate during elections
campaign in February.
