The Central Asian Media Support project, Cimera (Switzerland) and the Osh
Media Resource Center are organizing 3 day conference in Osh.
Title of the conference: "The role of mass media in Post-Soviet Conflict
Areas"
Dates of conduction: From 18th to 20th of May.
Place of conduction: Osh, southern Kyrghyzstan
Outline of the conference:
The aim of the conference is to bring together regional/international
journalists and regional/international experts to debate over contemporary
issues in Central Asia.
Journalists and experts from Uzbekistan, Kyrghyzstan, Tadjikistan,
Kazakstan, Russia, Switzerland, Great Britain, Armenia, Belgium, Turkey,
Germany and the USA will present and discuss following issues:
Sources of tensions in Central Asia:
1. Sources of tension in Central Asia: the Ferghana Valley;
2. The coverage of border issues between Uzbekistan and Kyrghyzstan in the
Kyrghyz press;
3. Threats for security in Uzbekistan: From nationalism to islamism;
Central Asian security in the regional context:
1. Russian policy in Central Asia;
2. Afghanistan and Central Asia;
3. Tadjikistan in post civil war era;
4. Inner political aspects of Kazakhstan's security;
State policies in preventing conflicts:
3 presentations
1. Uzbekistan state policy
2. Kyrghyzstan state policy
3. Tadjikistan state policy
Other conflicts in CIS
1. Chechen war- failure of political thinking
2. The role of mass media in Karabakh conflict
The summer-autumn 1999 Batken crisis and its coverage in the media of:
1. Kyrghyzstan
2. Uzbekistan
3. Tadjikistan.
The role of mass media in preventing conflicts

What NGOs can offer to prevent conflicts in the Ferghana Valley?
Three presentations from three republics (Uzbekistan, Kyrghyzstan,
Tadjikistan)
Apart from participating in these discussions, conference participants
will
meet government officials, representatives of ethnic and religious
minority
groups, clergy representatives of southern Kyrghyzstan.
A field trip from Osh to Jalal-Abad (via Uzbekistan) is planned to show
present situation at the border between Kyrghyzstan and Uzbekistan.
