Dear Russel,
About the relations between "ordinary" Kyrghyz and Uzbeks. Of course, these
relations are very complex and multi - sided to give a concrete overall
answer.
One thing is clear: both "ordinary" Kyrghyz and Uzbeks are unhappy about
difficulties
at crossing borders. It makes it difficult for relatives to see each other,
to travel. In Kyrghyzstan there is a public concern over rising prices for
flour, gas and other products. The dollar exchange rate affects even old
people who sell semechki (sun flower seeds). They add to the price of their
semechki because of the rising dollar exchange rate.
I don't think that there is much tension on individual level between Kyrghyz
and Uzbeks like 9 years ago during Osh clash, or 5 years ago. People are
angry at the governments. Uzbeks I talked to in Uzbekistan are suspicious
of the Kyrghyz government. The Kyrghyz people I spoke with are angry at
Uzbek government, (which they try to cover when speaking with an ethnic
Uzbek.)
In Kyrghyzstan, the role of opposition media in shaping public opinion is
very high like never ever before. More and more Kyrghyz friends I know are
preferring to read oppostion press to government owned ones. Their opinion
of government and its economic and political performance is very critical.
Since there is no opposition newspapers in Uzbekistan, "ordinary" Uzbeks
strongly believe that whatever the government does is right and is good for
people in the long run. Issues of security, raised by uzbek media, are
strongly supported by "ordinary' citizens of Uzbekistan.
Hope to hear from you,
Alisher Khamidov
Osh, Kyrghyzstan
