Uzbekistan - Public Announcement
November 17, 1999
On November 15, 1999 there was a skirmish between armed bandits and Uzbek
authorities near the town of Yangiyabad, resulting in the death of several
Uzbek police and forestry service personnel. Uzbek authorities have alleged
the men were linked to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan that recently held
four Japanese citizens and many Kyrgyz hostage in the neighboring Kyrgyz
Republic.
Uzbek authorities are implementing increased security measures, including
added police presence. The heightened security situation is likely to
continue at least through the December 5 parliamentary elections and the
January 9 presidential elections. American citizens should expect a greater
police presence and delays when traveling.
Americans traveling or residing in Uzbekistan are urged to review their
security practices, keep a low profile, vary routes and times for all
required travel, and contact the U.S. Embassy for updates on security
developments.
For further information on travel to Uzbekistan consult the latest Consular
Information Sheet for Uzbekistan.
This Public Announcement will expire January 31, 2000.
