I recently returned from a short tour of the Valley (east to west, including
the four cities mentioned), which may have caused me to miss the proposed
discussion. In the context of the quote, I was struck by seeing for myself
(1) the objective absurdity of the borders and their negative impact on
travel, the economy and the quality of life in the Valley, and (2) the
absence of anything like a hotel suitable for travelers, let alone tourists,
in those four cities (with the partial exception of Khujand). The current
security situation and the related drug trade may render discussion fruitless
for the time being but I at least would be interested in any reaction to the
points raised by Dr. Badenkov. David Nalle, Washington editor, Central Asia
