Dear M. Khamidov,
Thank you for your interesting and informative submission to the list
and also your return note to me.
If you can comment, I would very much appreciate your perspective on the
likely intent of the guerrillas illegally gathered in the Batken region
and fighting against Kyrgyz government forces.
It has been mentioned in the overseas press that this group's main
objective was to make their way through Ferghana into Uzbekistan where
they intended to establish an opposition base against the regime there.
Do you believe this to be true?
While I can imagine that this might have been their original objective
before they and their activities were brought under an international
spotlight, it is now hard to imagine that they can consider such a goal
as still viable. They have become isolated and identified. It would
seem they would now make an easy target if they tried to move across to
Uzbekistan, at least as a group. I can't see how they can expect to
accomplish a surreptitious migration.
If you agree that their original goal has become unrealistic, can you
venture an educated guess as to what their revised objectives might be?
What can they hope to accomplish now?
Sincerely,
Patrick Eckford
