Dear collegues,
I am a new member of the Ferghana Valley Discussion List. But I know the area more than 35 years. I am a mountain project leader in the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Science. My academic research is oriented on sustainable mountain development issues in context of Chapter 13 (Fragile ecosystems: sustainable mountain development) of Agenda 21. Many times I crossed Ferghana valley from West to East and from South to North. One of the most interesting travel I did in British Expedition "Marco Polo" at 1987. It was a "scout" jorney on UNESCO Silk Road Project.
I would propose one topic for discussion: Transport infrastructure development in Ferghana Valley - the road of integration in Central Asia. I believe, that the following themes would be interesting and practically significant:
- Rehabilitation role of the market sities along Ferghana Valley (Hujant, Kokand, Andizhan, Osh) - "Caravan Sarai models".
- Ferghana Valley Charter - Fergana Valley Convention (?) - legal aspects of regional cooperation and development (inter-governmental Agreement for sustainable Development in Fergana Valley).
- Ferghana Valley - Mountain Areas of Pamiro-Alai and Tien-Shan: interaction system.
I'm interesting for Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China Project: Ferghana Valley-Osh-Saritash-Kashgar Road. May be somebody knows details of this outstanding Project?
I'd like to use a chance to send my greetings to many old friends from Central Asia and Ferghana Valley, particularly. As well as to my friends in London, Washington D.C. and Germany. Indeed, a very warm regards to Bakit Beshimov - hope to see you soon in Bishkek.
Best regards, Yuri
