Dear Colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to a recently posted section of the
website of the Ferghana Valley Development Programme which is devoted to
the Programme's "Conference for Donor Awareness and Coordination" was held
on 19 June at Lake Issyk-Kul. You'll find this at the "Issyk-Kul
Conference" page of the site:
http://www.ferghana.elcat.kg/

I would note that the website generally is still under development since it
is meant to be a growing thing that meets changing demands. We welcome
your thoughts and suggestions on how it can be improved.

The Issyk-Kul Conference was just a beginning -- meeting the goals of this
programme is ahead of us, and this will require good cooperation and
collaboration between the various organizations with common goals. An
important step in this process will be taken sometime in the fall with
another conference on Ferghana Valley issues to be organized in Washington
by the Council on Foreign Relations and the Open Society Institute, and I
look very much forward to this. This conference is occasioned by the
publication of the Council on Foreign Relations' study of the problems of
development and cooperation in the Ferghana Valley (authored by Barnett
Rubin, Nancy Lubin and Keith Martin). Those who were at the Issyk-Kul
Conference saw advance copies of this important work, while official
publication is due in the next few months.

John Schoeberlein
