Dear Ferghana-Valley List Members,

Have you ever encountered the problem that it is hard to find good
information on the Ferghana Valley? There are many things that make this
harder -- the fact that publications specifically on this region are few and
hard to find, the Valley is divided between three countries, the literature
is in many languages, etc.

We would like to make available a good list of the literature on the region
on the website of the Ferghana Valley Development Programme
(http://www.ferghana.elcat.kg/), as well as in paper format.

We ask your help in making this list as comprehensive as possible. Please
send us anything you can. Don't worry about the format. If you can cut and
paste whatever you have into an e-mail message or attached file, this would
be greatly appreciated. As soon as possible, we'll put this on the website,
and we'll continue to update it as the information increases.

We will include literature of the following kinds:

1) Publications on current social and economic conditions in the Valley, on
development issues, and on anything that is relevant to the development of
the region (politics, etc.)

2) Documents produced by governments and development organizations on the
issues facing the region and programs to address them.

3) General background information about the Ferghana Valley in the context
of the Central Asian region. This will include history, culture, geography,
etc., and we would like to include not only publications focused on the
Valley itself, but also good general works that include coverage of the
Valley. This category can also include good travel information sources, and
perhaps fiction or memoires on the Valley -- anything that can make our
understanding and experience of the Valley richer.

Please give complete bibliographic references, if possible, so that people
can find them. If the publication is not in English, you might give a
translation but definitely include the original title, so that people can
find it.

If you have your own publications on this subject, this is a great
opportunity to bring them to the attention of those who are most interested.
The membership of this discussion list includes over 300 of the people
worldwide most concerned with Ferghana Valley subject-matter. The website
where this will be posted can reach an even broader audience. If you want
also to send us copies of your publications, we'll put them to good use and
help them reach a broader audience, as well. Website references are also
welcome.

Thank you very much for your assistance! Working together, we can provide
mutual benefit to broad community of those interested in and concerned about
the Ferghana Valley.

Sincerely,

John Schoeberlein
