Dear List members,
Considering the outbreak of introductions, I thought I would follow suit.
My name is Sean R. Roberts, and I am an anthropology PhD candidate at the
University of Southern California. My primary interest is in the Uighurs
of the Ili valley (about whom I am writing my dissertation), but I have
also long been interested in the Ferghana valley. Among my interests in
the Ferghana valley is the disappearance of
Uighurs/Khojas/Kashgarliqlar/Taghliqlar who apparently became Uzbeks in
their passports sometime in the late 1920s and early 1930s. However, I am
also interested in the development of the valley as a multi-borderlands
lodged between states which are rapidly developing in different ways from
each other.
I studied at Tashkent State University in 1989-90, and my roomates were
from the Andijan area which allowed me to visit the valley several times.
In 1994-95 and 1997, I was doing research in the Ili valley among the
Uighur population, but I also visited Kashgar Kishloq near Osh where many
of the Uzbekified Uighurs live.
Presently, I work at USAID in Almaty and manage USAID's civil society
programs in the five countries of Central Asia. In this capacity, I am
interested in the development of NGOs in the Ferghana valley, including how
social organizations from all three countries can network and help
establish peaceful cross-border relations. I would welcome correspondence
on any or all of these issues and hope to be an active member of the list.
However, over the next three months, I will be taking leave from my USAID
work to - inshallah - finish my dissertation. Thus, during that time, it
