Hello everybody.

My name is Abdumalik Ismailov. Originally I
am from Namangan but live and work in
Tashkent.
Before joining UNHCR [United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees]office in Tashkent
in 1997 I worked in Central Asian Section of
BBC World Service in London.
My interest in joining this electronic forum
was a range of issues relating to my job, job of
Public Information Assistant, that is issues of
refugees and displaced persons, interethnic
tolerance in Fergana valley.
According to UNHCR estimates there are about
30 000 Tajik and 9 000 Afghan refugees in
Uzbekistan. Most of Tajik refugees have
unofficially found shelter in their relatives
houses in Uzbek part of the Valley.

On personal note I travelled a lot in Fergana
Valley and visited many sacred sites on
history of which I am quite interested. It would
be great to put into paper what I heard from
local people telling the origin, meaning of
these sites.
Although, having studied Sharia at Al-Azhar
University, only recently I started to be
interested and like to discuss how Islam is
"adapted" according to geography, mentality of
a nation. It is applicable to the Fergana Valley
as well.
My proposal on how this list should involve
more people directly from the Valley itself is
that those in Fergana Valley could share the
access to e-mail with them.
