Friends -
I am another member of the Ferghana Valley discussion list. Until January, I
was working in Bishkek with television and radio stations. Now, I am
finishing my Master's degree in international economics and Russian Area
studies at the School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in
Washington DC.
My main work-based interest is the media, specifically the development of
independent media and the reform of the state television system. But I'm
also interested in the water problem, nationalism issues, and the history
of the region.
For example, recently at a SAIS Central Asian Institute seminar with the
ambassadors of the Kyrghyz Republic and Uzbekistan, the KG ambassador
confirmed that there is a growing conflict between KG and UZ. Has anybody
living in the area felt that tensions are increasing recently? I remember
the UZ state tv broadcasts that got some of the KG deputies (Duranbek
Sadyrbaev, Adahan
Madumarov) pretty upset.
Best,
Alexis Martin
