Dear Listmembers,
Greetings from Bishkek. I'm working here at the American University,
teaching Economics to International Relations students. I have visited the
Valley just once (a visit to Osh a fortnight ago). My interst is twofold;
firstly, the effects of economic transition in the Valley; and secondly,
the efffects of ethnic tensions. (I lived for nine years in Cyprus, which
is a good example of how tensions can escalate to war and division).
The organisation that brought me here, Civic Education project, is
organising an economists' conference here in Bishkek, from 2nd to 6th
June. The main theme of the conference is the problems of economic
transition in Central Asia, and the prospects for positive economic growth
over the next few years.
Although we are particularly interested in papers from University
students, and dealing with the problems of the Central Asian republics, we
would also like to hear of any papers dealing with the problems of other
transition economies. Also, I should like to be able to invite other
people (University teachers, or development professionals) to make
presentations.
We have a budget to pay for local travel, and accommodation costs of
student participants (and maybe others); and can arrange for an official
invitation for people who need visas for Kyrgyzstan. If you know of any
students working on relevant projects, or if you are interested
yourself, I should be grateful if you could contact me directly,
preferably by email.
Thank you, and with best wishes to all celebrating Easter this weekend,
Jonathan Warner
