To the members of the FERGHANA VALLEY discussion lists.

I´m a new member to the list and would like to introduce myself to the other
members of this list.
I´m a Ph.D. candidate (economic and social geography) and the topic of my
research is "Socio-economic disparities in the Fergana-Valley. Spatial
consequences of the central asian transformation process". This research
project is sponsered by an university research grant of the University
Bonn/Germany
but does not include any involvment in any institution, not even the
university
itself - just the grant (I do think this system is different from other
countries).

So I´m very happy about this discussion list, hoping that it will give me
chance to get in contact with as many people as possible from the Ferghana
Valley
and people who work about or in it. I wrote my master´s paper about the
socio-economic development in Uzbekistan since 1991 and spend a couple of
month there in 1996. Currently I´m planning a 2 month research trip to
Central Asia
starting in the middle of may to get information for my Ph.D. paper. As I
said, because I´m not involved in any institution, doing this research more or
less on my own, I happy for any hints, tips, contacts I´m able to obtain!

My major interests are:
- social and economic development in the Ferghana Valley
- transformation policy (what it looks like in "the real world"), being a
geographer the spatial impact is of special interest for me
- Relations between the three "Member" States of the Ferghana Valley
- the impact the historical development of this area has for todays
development and of course a lot more.
Although this is not the subject of the list I would be happy to find out, if
there is any "Researchers list" about people (geographers, economists,
sociologists, historian etc.) who work about this ares and central asia.

I´m not going to be near my computer the last two weeks in April but do very
much look forward to the discussion!

Greetings from Germany
Claudia Stein
