Subject: Request for teacher exchange and grant information--College
of the Humanities/Foundation for the Support of Youth Education,
Taraz, Kazakhstan
To all members of the CivilSoc list:
The College of the Humanities and the Foundation for the Support of
Youth Education in Taraz, Kazakhstan, are seeking information and
assistance on the following topics:
- Short-term exchange programs (1-3 months) for Kazakhstani teachers
in the US and elsewhere, as well as longer programs (up to 1 year),
particularly in the fields of art, music, and education;
- Opportunities for Kazakhstani students (ages 17-20) to study
abroad;
- Potential sources of financial support for the Foundation's
educational and anti-poverty efforts, in particular, the equipping of
a woodworking shop and other facilities for the Foundation's new
program of vocational training for unemployed parents and children,
as well as humanitarian aid, especiallly clothing.
- Support for funding a new print run of the Foundation's book,
"Games as a Means of Environmental Instruction and Education".
The Taraz College of the Humanities is a state institution providing
instruction in art, music, and education and teacher training for
students between the ages of 17 and 20. Many of its graduates go on
to further study at universities in Kazakhstan, Russia, and
elsewhere.
The Foundation for the Support of Youth Education was founded as an
independent NGO by employees of the College in 1995. Its activities
include encouraging youth education and academic competition,
environmental education, the arts and culture, and anti-poverty
programs aimed at Taraz's youth, including the founding of
neighborhood clubs to offer educational and psychological advice and
counseling. The Foundation's latest program, the "Fight Against
Poverty," will train unemployed parents and their children together
in vocational trades (woodworking/sculpting, the manufacture of
household items, folk art) and help provide jobs for them. Future
plans include the expansion of the Foundation's activities to include
anti-drug and alcohol work. Past collaborators include the Soros
Foundation-Kazakhstan, among others.
